Last updated: October 2026

Holland and Barrett lists about 240 magnesium products online, including around ten own-brand supplements in bisglycinate, citrate, oxide, malate, taurate and complex forms. When we checked in October 2026, these gave between 60mg and 400mg of magnesium per daily serving. The number in a product’s name isn’t always the magnesium you get.

Everything below comes from Holland and Barrett’s own website and official sources. We don’t rate, rank or review other brands’ products.

Prefer to buy direct from the maker? Our Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex is a berry powder with magnesium bisglycinate and citrate (148mg of magnesium per serving), glycine and L-theanine. Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Evopure is sold online only and isn’t sold by, or connected with, Holland and Barrett.

What magnesium does Holland and Barrett sell?

Holland and Barrett’s magnesium category listed 240 products when we checked on 23 October 2026: tablets, capsules, powders, gummies, sprays, bath flakes and drinks from dozens of brands. Its own-brand magnesium supplements to swallow were these:

Own-brand product Form Magnesium per day Serving
Magnesium 375mg Tablets Oxide 375mg 1 tablet
Magnesium Bisglycinate 375mg Bisglycinate, plus oxide 85mg 1 capsule
Magnesium Bisglycinate 1250mg Bisglycinate 250mg 2 capsules
Magnesium Citrate (100mg tablets) Citrate 300mg 3 tablets
Magnesium Citrate (400mg) Citrate 400mg 2 tablets
Magnesium 375mg Powder Citrate 375mg Half a teaspoon
Magnesium Citrate Gummies Citrate, plus B6 150mg 1 gummy
Magnesium Complex 150mg Taurate, malate, bisglycinate 150mg 2 capsules
Mag Malate 150mg Malate 150mg 1 tablet
Mag Taurate Taurate, plus B6 60mg 1 capsule

All say to take them “preferably with a meal”. The bisglycinate capsules, citrate tablets, powder and gummies are tagged vegan. Stock varies by shop, so treat this as a snapshot.

Label maths: compound mg vs magnesium

Magnesium in a supplement is always bound to something else, such as glycine, citric acid or oxygen. A label can give the weight of the whole compound and the elemental magnesium, the magnesium itself. Only the second counts towards your daily amount. Two own-brand products both have “375mg” in their names:

  • Magnesium 375mg Tablets: one tablet gives 375mg of magnesium (100% of the nutrient reference value, or NRV), from magnesium oxide.
  • Magnesium Bisglycinate 375mg Capsules: one capsule contains 375mg of magnesium bisglycinate and 95mg of magnesium oxide, which together supply 85mg of elemental magnesium.

Across the range, the labels list:

Product Compound on the label Elemental magnesium
Bisglycinate 1250mg (2 capsules) 1,250mg bisglycinate 250mg (67% NRV)
Mag Malate 150mg (1 tablet) 1,100mg malate 150mg (40% NRV)
Mag Taurate (1 capsule) 750mg taurate 60mg (16% NRV)
Bisglycinate 375mg (1 capsule) 375mg bisglycinate, 95mg oxide 85mg

Glycinate, malate and taurate are heavy compounds, so much of the weight is the partner molecule; oxide is light. To compare products, find the “magnesium” or “elemental magnesium” line in the nutrition table. Our guide to the types of magnesium explains each partner.

Holland and Barrett magnesium glycinate

Holland and Barrett’s own glycinate products are sold as magnesium bisglycinate (magnesium bound to two glycine molecules):

  • Magnesium Bisglycinate 375mg Capsules (30 or 90): one a day, 85mg of magnesium, from bisglycinate plus a little oxide, in a vegetable (HPMC) capsule.
  • Magnesium Bisglycinate 1250mg Capsules (60): two a day, 250mg of magnesium, with bisglycinate as the only magnesium source listed.

Its magnesium glycinate sub-category listed 21 products when we checked, from brands including FutureYou Cambridge, NaturesPlus, One Nutrition, Peak Supps, Rym Nutrition, Solaray, Supplement Place, Time Health, Vita London, Zenutra and Zooki. The own-brand Magnesium Complex also contains bisglycinate.

For what the research says, see our magnesium glycinate guide.

Holland and Barrett magnesium citrate

Citrate is the form Holland and Barrett uses most across its own range:

  • Magnesium Citrate Tablets, 100mg: three tablets a day give 300mg.
  • Magnesium Citrate Tablets, 400mg: two tablets a day give 400mg (107% NRV).
  • Magnesium 375mg Powder: the only ingredient listed is magnesium citrate. Half a teaspoon (2.6g) gives 375mg.
  • Magnesium Citrate Gummies: one tropical-flavour gummy gives 150mg, plus 0.7mg of vitamin B6. Sugar is the first ingredient listed, followed by glucose syrup.

The two tablet products share a name (“Magnesium Citrate 90 Tablets”), so check the strength on the pack. Citrate is one of the better-studied forms: in a 60-day UK trial in 46 healthy adults, citrate raised blood magnesium more than an amino-acid chelate or oxide. Read more in our magnesium citrate guide, and if you’re choosing between the two most searched forms, glycinate vs citrate vs threonate.

Holland and Barrett magnesium complex

The own-brand Magnesium Complex 150mg contains three forms: taurate, malate and bisglycinate. Two capsules give 150mg of magnesium (40% NRV), and the description says this includes 250mg of magnesium bisglycinate. The “150mg” in its name is the elemental magnesium, unlike the bisglycinate capsules.

Other brands’ blends on the shelf include Vita London’s 6 in 1 Complex, Paused’s 3 In 1 Complex and BetterYou’s Magnesium Max triple blend powder. There’s very little research on blends as such. Our guide to magnesium complex covers what is known.

Sprays, combinations and kids’ gummies

  • Magnesium Spray 100ml: water and magnesium chloride, to spray on and massage into the skin. Three pumps contain 310mg of magnesium chloride. It is for external use only. See our magnesium spray guide on what the research says about absorption through the skin.
  • Magnesium and Zinc Tablets: two tablets give 266mg of magnesium and 10mg of zinc.
  • Calcium + Magnesium and Vitamin D: one tablet gives 500mg of calcium, 250mg of magnesium (from oxide) and 5µg of vitamin D.
  • Vegan Kids Magnesium Gummies: one strawberry gummy gives 60mg of magnesium, from citrate. Ask your GP or pharmacist before giving a child any supplement, and see our guide to magnesium for kids.

Which other magnesium brands does Holland and Barrett stock?

Holland and Barrett’s own brand had the most listings in the magnesium category (26, counting pack sizes and combinations). In alphabetical order, other brands with several listings included:

  • Applied Nutrition, BetterYou, Iron Labs Nutrition, MAG365, Natural Vitality, NaturesPlus, New Leaf Products, New Nordic, Novomins and NUYU
  • Osi Magnesium, Solgar, Supplement Place, Vitabiotics, Zooki and dozens of smaller brands

More than half the listings were marked as marketplace products, sold by other companies through Holland and Barrett’s website; its marketplace help page explains how to tell who is selling. Looking for threonate? Solgar’s Magnesium L-Threonate is listed; see magnesium L-threonate. For Vitabiotics, see what’s in Vitabiotics Ultra Magnesium.

We aren’t rating or ranking any of these. For a general guide to comparing magnesium supplements wherever you shop, see our UK magnesium supplement guide.

Holland and Barrett magnesium for sleep

None of the own-brand magnesium supplements we checked are described as sleep products. Their pages use authorised magnesium claims such as reducing tiredness and fatigue, which fits UK rules: no health claim linking magnesium to sleep is authorised. Some other brands on the shelf use “sleep” in product names. The research so far:

  • A 2021 review found three trials in 151 older adults. People fell asleep about 17 minutes faster than with placebo, but the authors rated the evidence low to very low quality.
  • A 2025 German trial gave 155 adults with poor sleep 250mg of magnesium as bisglycinate, or a placebo, each day. Insomnia scores improved a little more with magnesium at 4 weeks, and the authors described the effect as small.

Magnesium isn’t a sedative. See magnesium for sleep for the full picture. If poor sleep goes on for weeks, speak to your GP.

How to choose a magnesium at Holland and Barrett

People often search for the “best” magnesium at Holland and Barrett. We can’t say which product is best for you, but here is what each form is:

Form What it is Worth knowing
Glycinate or bisglycinate Bound to glycine Heavy compound: check the elemental mg
Citrate Bound to citric acid Well studied in small trials
Oxide Bound to oxygen Lots of magnesium per tablet; lower absorption in studies
Malate Bound to malic acid Little research on its own
Taurate Bound to taurine Little research in people
Chloride spray Dissolved in water Goes on the skin, not swallowed

On absorption, the studies are small. A US study measured about 4% of magnesium oxide absorbed, while chloride, lactate and aspartate did better. The UK trial mentioned above found citrate and an amino-acid chelate were absorbed better than oxide over 60 days. Even so, a form with lower absorption can still supply a useful amount if the dose is higher.

Then decide how much elemental magnesium you want, the format you’ll actually take, and whether you want extras such as vitamin B6 or zinc.

How much magnesium a day, and adding it up

The NHS says adults aged 19 to 64 need 300mg a day (men) or 270mg a day (women), most of which you should get from food. It adds that 400mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause any harm, and that taking more than 400mg for a short time can cause diarrhoea. If you take more than one product, add them up:

Your supplements Added magnesium Against the NHS 400mg
2 bisglycinate 1250mg capsules 250mg Within
2 citrate 400mg tablets 400mg At the limit
2 citrate 400mg tablets plus 1 calcium and magnesium tablet 650mg Over

Holland and Barrett’s own-brand labels advise checking with a doctor or healthcare professional first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking any medication or under medical supervision. For more, see how much magnesium per day and magnesium side effects.

Where Evopure fits

Evopure isn’t sold by Holland and Barrett, and we’re not connected with it. We sell online, direct from our own website. These are different products, not like-for-like swaps:

  • Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex: a berry powder with magnesium bisglycinate and citrate (148mg of elemental magnesium per serving), glycine, L-theanine, chamomile, passionflower, hops and oat straw. Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal psychological function.
  • Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex: a reishi hot chocolate made with reishi mushroom extract, organic cacao, maca, coconut milk powder and coconut sugar. It contains a little natural caffeine from the cacao.
  • Sleep CBD Oil: broad spectrum CBD with 0% THC, plus passion flower and a terpene blend led by myrcene, made for an evening routine. CBD isn’t a treatment for sleep problems.

The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.

All three are vegan, made in the UK and tested by ISO 17025 accredited labs, with reports on request from our lab testing page. Our CBD is on the FSA public list, linked to validated applications RP438, RP821 and RP47. Our products are for adults (18+) only, and we don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
