A 12 in 1 magnesium complex mixes 12 forms of magnesium, such as glycinate, citrate, malate, taurate and oxide, in one supplement. It can be a reasonable way to get magnesium, but 12 forms aren’t proven to beat one or two. What matters is the elemental magnesium per serving and which forms supply most of it.
Below: what real 12 in 1, 10 in 1, 7 in 1 and 5 in 1 labels contain, the label maths, each form’s evidence, and how to take one safely. For blends in general, see our guide to what a magnesium complex is.
What’s in a 12 in 1 magnesium complex?
Most labels list glycinate (or bisglycinate), citrate, malate, taurate, oxide, carbonate, chloride, lactate, gluconate, aspartate, ascorbate and orotate. Some swap in L-threonate, succinate or hydroxide. A 10, 7 or 5 in 1 uses a shorter list.

The label maths: 700mg is not 700mg of magnesium
Magnesium is always bound to a partner, such as glycine or citric acid, and the partner adds weight. So a “700mg complex” is usually the weight of the compounds. The figure that counts towards the 300mg (men) or 270mg (women) the NHS says adults need is the elemental magnesium, sometimes shown as “of which magnesium”.
- Blend vs elemental: one 12-in-1 label gives a 1,000mg blend and 420mg of magnesium from 2 capsules.
- Twelve ways means small amounts: split 420mg evenly across 12 forms and each supplies about 35mg (our sum). Most labels don’t give the split.
- One form often dominates: a 7-in-1 label that does show the split gives 500mg of magnesium, of which 352mg (70%) is from oxide. Citrate gives 68mg, malate 32mg, bisglycinate 28mg, ascorbate 10mg, taurate 6mg and gluconate 2mg.
- Read the ingredients order: in the UK, ingredients are listed by weight, main ingredient first. On one 10-in-1 label, oxide is the first magnesium compound listed and bisglycinate comes fifth.
Oxide is common because it’s about 60% magnesium by weight, so a big number fits in a small capsule. It’s also one of the least absorbed forms; see magnesium oxide. To compare any product, use how much magnesium per day as your yardstick.
Is a 12 in 1 magnesium complex good for you?
It can be a fine supplement for a healthy adult, but not because it has 12 forms. Judge it like any magnesium:
- Does the label state the elemental magnesium per serving?
- Do well-absorbed forms (glycinate, citrate, malate, chloride, lactate) supply most of it, or oxide?
- Is the daily total 400mg or less from supplements?
We searched PubMed in October 2026 and found no human trial comparing a 12-in-1 blend with one or two good forms. The only comparison we found was a 2026 rat study, funded by a blend’s maker, which reported broadly similar effects to single forms. In people, a 2021 review of 14 studies found organic forms tend to be better absorbed than inorganic ones such as oxide, and a 2019 test of 15 products found big differences between products.
“12 in 1” counts forms, not how much magnesium you absorb. For a single-form route, see magnesium glycinate and magnesium citrate, or compare the main three in glycinate vs citrate vs threonate.
12 forms or 2? Where Evopure fits
Our Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex is a two-form complex: magnesium bisglycinate and citrate, giving 148mg of elemental magnesium per serving, with glycine, L-theanine, oat straw, hops, chamomile and passionflower. It’s a berry-flavoured drink powder for the evening. Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
It’s a different approach, not a better one: two well-tolerated forms in a stated amount, instead of 12 forms in small amounts. No oxide, no threonate. For powders, see magnesium glycinate powder.
- Sleep CBD Oil: broad spectrum CBD with 0% THC, passion flower extract and a night-time terpene blend.
- Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex: a reishi hot chocolate with organic cacao and maca. It contains a little natural caffeine.
The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.
All three are vegan, made in the UK and for adults (18+) only.
Each form: the claim vs the evidence
| Form | Often marketed for | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|---|
| Glycinate | Sleep, calm | Well absorbed; no proof the form itself aids sleep |
| Citrate | Absorption, digestion | Well absorbed; can loosen stools |
| Malate | Energy | Limited research; energy claims unproven |
| Taurate | Heart | Mostly animal research |
| Oxide | “High strength” | Poorly absorbed in trials |
| Carbonate | Stomach | Used in antacids; little form research |
| Chloride | Absorption | Absorbed as well as lactate and aspartate |
| Lactate | Gentle | Absorbed as well as chloride |
| Aspartate | Energy | Absorbed as well as chloride |
| Gluconate | Absorption | Little form-specific research |
| Ascorbate | Immunity | Adds a little vitamin C |
| Orotate | Heart | Small older studies; not a GB-listed form |
In Great Britain, the authorised health claims belong to magnesium as a nutrient, not to any one form. Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal muscle function, to normal functioning of the nervous system and to normal psychological function. A line saying one form is “for sleep” or “for the heart” isn’t an authorised claim.
Orotate isn’t on the GB list of forms permitted in supplements; see magnesium orotate. Also read magnesium taurate, magnesium malate, magnesium L-threonate and the full list of types of magnesium.
How to take a 12 in 1 magnesium complex
- Dose: follow the label, then check the elemental figure. The NHS says adults need 300mg (men) or 270mg (women) a day, mostly from food, and 400mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm.
- Watch the total: two of the labels we checked give 500mg a day. Add up every product you take, including multivitamins.
- Timing: any time, ideally with food; many people take it in the evening, and it takes a few weeks (see how long magnesium takes to work). See the best time to take magnesium.
- Men and women: the same product suits both; only the daily need differs. See magnesium for men and magnesium for women.

Side effects and who should check first
Side effects are the same as for any magnesium. The NHS says more than 400mg for a short time can cause diarrhoea; oxide and citrate are the forms most linked with loose stools. Lower or split the dose if that happens. More in magnesium side effects.
Ask your GP or pharmacist first if you:
- have kidney disease, because your kidneys clear extra magnesium
- take antibiotics such as doxycycline or ciprofloxacin, as magnesium can reduce their absorption
- take alendronic acid; the NHS asks you to tell your doctor about supplements containing magnesium
- take levothyroxine, which the NHS says may not mix with antacids or some mineral supplements
- take any other regular medicine
Check any added vitamins or herbs too. We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Our products are for adults (18+) only; ask a GP before giving any magnesium supplement to a child.
If you want a single form rather than a complex, see Healthy Metal magnesium, a bisglycinate-only drink mix.
FAQs
Is 12 in 1 magnesium complex good for you?
It can be a reasonable choice for most healthy adults at a sensible dose. There’s no evidence 12 forms beat one or two well-absorbed ones, so check the elemental magnesium and the main forms.
How much magnesium is in a 700mg 12 in 1 complex?
Usually much less. 700mg is often the compound weight; one 12-in-1 label gives 420mg of magnesium from a 1,000mg blend. Look for “elemental magnesium” or “of which magnesium”.
Is 12 in 1 magnesium better than magnesium glycinate?
Not proven; no human trial has compared them. Glycinate is well absorbed, while a 12-in-1 depends on its mix, especially how much is oxide.
When is the best time to take 12 in 1 magnesium?
Any time, ideally with food; many people take it in the evening. Ask your pharmacist about spacing it from antibiotics, bisphosphonates or levothyroxine.
What are the side effects of 12 in 1 magnesium?
Mainly loose stools or diarrhoea, more likely above 400mg a day or with a lot of oxide or citrate. Check with your GP first if you have kidney disease.
Is a 10 in 1 or 7 in 1 magnesium complex different?
Only in the number of forms. Judge them the same way: elemental magnesium, the main forms, and 400mg or less a day from supplements.
