Sober October is a month off alcohol, from 1 to 31 October. The hardest part for most people is the evening drink, so the trick is to swap it rather than skip it. The best Sober October drinks are warm, ritual-style nightcaps: reishi hot cacao, a sleepy girl mocktail, golden milk or a calming herbal tea.
Below are seven alcohol-free nightcaps worth making, what tends to happen to your sleep and energy when you stop drinking for a month, and how to get through the evenings that usually come with a glass in hand.
What is Sober October?
Sober October is a challenge to go alcohol-free for the whole of October. In the UK it was popularised by Macmillan Cancer Support’s Go Sober for October fundraiser, launched in 2014, and many people now do it for their own health, often with friends or as a sponsored challenge.
There are no strict rules. Some people go fully alcohol-free, others use it to reset their habits before the party season. Either way, a month is long enough to notice a difference and short enough to feel doable.

Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex
Reishi Cacao is a hot chocolate made with reishi mushroom, cacao and maca. It contains a little natural caffeine from the cacao, so it suits earlier in the evening.

The NHS says people who cut down on alcohol often notice feeling better in the mornings and being less tired and more energetic, with better mood, memory and sleep among the longer-term benefits.
Sleep is where many people feel it first. Alcohol can help you drop off, but it means less time in REM sleep, the stage linked to feeling rested, and it makes night-time trips to the toilet more likely. That is why a few drinks can leave you waking up unrefreshed even after a full night in bed.
For context, UK guidelines say that if you do drink, it is best to have no more than 14 units a week, spread over three days or more. That is around six medium glasses of wine.
7 alcohol-free nightcaps for Sober October
The secret is to replace the ritual, not just the drink: a nice glass or mug, the same time each evening, and something that feels like a treat.
| Nightcap | What’s in it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Reishi hot cacao | Reishi cacao powder whisked into warm oat or almond milk | Replacing an evening glass of red |
| Sleepy girl mocktail | Tart cherry juice, magnesium powder, sparkling water | Something cold and fizzy |
| Warm magnesium berry drink | A serving of berry magnesium powder in warm water | A quick, low-sugar option |
| Golden milk | Warm milk, turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, cinnamon, honey | Cosy autumn evenings |
| Chamomile and passionflower tea | A herbal blend, steeped for five minutes | The lightest option |
| Tart cherry spritzer | Tart cherry juice, soda water, lime, lots of ice | Social occasions and the pub |
| Alcohol-free beer or wine | Look for 0.0% on the label | When you want the familiar taste |
How to make the reishi hot cacao
- Warm a mug of oat or almond milk. Warm, not boiling.
- Add one to two teaspoons of Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex.
- Whisk or froth until smooth.
- Drink it 30 to 60 minutes before bed, ideally away from your phone.
For the cold option, our UK sleepy girl mocktail recipe has the full method. A note on alcohol-free beer and wine: “alcohol-free” in the UK can still mean up to 0.05%, so check the label if you want a true zero.
Why reishi cacao works as a wine swap
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a mushroom that has been used in traditional East Asian practice for around 2,000 years. Today it is one of the most popular functional mushrooms, usually taken in the evening as part of a calming routine.
Our reishi cacao is a rich hot chocolate made from cocoa powder, reishi mushroom, maca root and coconut sugar. There are no artificial sweeteners or flavourings, and it is vegan and made in the UK. It tastes of chocolate, not mushroom.
The real reason it works as a wine swap is simpler than any ingredient: it gives you something warm and indulgent to make at the moment you would normally pour a glass. That is the habit you are changing. If you want to know more about the mushroom itself, read our guide to reishi mushroom for sleep or the benefits of reishi cacao.
How to get through the evenings
- Plan your swap in advance. Have your nightcap ingredients in the cupboard before the first Friday night.
- Change the cue. If you normally pour a drink when you get in from work, go for a short walk or change clothes first instead.
- Tell people. Friends are far less likely to push a drink on you if they know you are doing a challenge, and sponsorship adds motivation.
- Order first at the pub. Ask for your alcohol-free option before anyone offers you a round.
- Notice the wins. Jot down how you sleep and how you feel in the mornings. It is the best reason to keep going.
- Be kind to yourself. If you slip, just carry on. One drink doesn’t undo the month.
The clocks go back on 25 October too, so a calmer evening routine this month pays off twice.
Sober October vs Dry January
| Sober October | Dry January | |
|---|---|---|
| When | 1 to 31 October | 1 to 31 January |
| Timing | A reset before the party season | A reset after the party season |
| Social pressure | Halloween and early Christmas dos | Quieter month, fewer events |
| Why people do it | Charity fundraising and a health check-in | New Year’s resolutions |

Many people find October easier: there are fewer New Year expectations, and finishing just before the festive season makes it easier to keep some of the new habits going.
