The best hot chocolate gifts pair a good drinking chocolate with something to make the moment: a mug, marshmallows, a spoon and a cosy extra. Choose a ready-made gift set or hamper, a luxury flaked chocolate, hot chocolate bombs, a hot chocolate maker, or make a layered DIY jar for a few pounds.
Below: the main types of hot chocolate gift and who each suits, a layered gift jar recipe with label wording, how to build a hamper, what to check on the label, and ideas for anyone cutting down on sugar or alcohol.
Christmas hot chocolate gift ideas at a glance
Most Christmas hot chocolate gifts fall into one of seven types. Match the gift to the person, then check the few details that matter.
| Gift type | Who it suits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gift set or gift box with a mug | Secret Santa, colleagues, teens | Mug is dishwasher safe; enough powder for several mugs |
| Hot chocolate hamper | Families, couples, a thank you | What’s actually inside, not just the basket |
| Luxury or flavoured drinking chocolate | Food lovers, dark chocolate fans | Cocoa %, flakes or powder, flavourings |
| Hot chocolate bombs | Children (with an adult) and fun-lovers | Fragile in the post; most marshmallows contain gelatine |
| Hot chocolate maker | Someone who drinks it daily | Works with any chocolate, or only one brand’s |
| Lower-sugar or functional cacao | Health-minded friends, Dry January | Sugar per serving, caffeine, adults-only blends |
| DIY gift jar | Anyone, on a small budget | Allergens and a best-before date on the tag |
Well-known UK names include Hotel Chocolat (whose Velvetiser is a popular hot chocolate maker), Knoops, Whittard and Cadbury, and supermarkets sell their own gift sets and bombs from November. Evopure isn’t connected with any of them. Prices change through the season, so compare what’s in the box rather than the box itself.
If you’re shopping to a budget, our wellness gifts by budget guide has ideas under £20, £50 and £100, and our wellness stocking fillers are good for the small extras.
DIY hot chocolate gift jar
A layered jar costs a few pounds, looks lovely on a shelf and makes about 8 mugs. You need a clean, completely dry 500ml jar with a tight lid and a funnel or a rolled-up piece of paper.
The layers (bottom to top)
- 60g unsweetened cocoa powder
- 100g caster sugar (or golden caster sugar for a warmer stripe)
- 50g dried skimmed milk powder
- 50g dark chocolate chips
- Mini marshmallows to fill the top, or tie a small bag of them to the lid so they stay soft
Spoon each layer in gently and tap the jar on the worktop to level it before adding the next. For a spiced jar, mix 1 teaspoon of cinnamon into the sugar. For a vegan jar, swap the milk powder for coconut milk powder, and use dairy-free chocolate chips and vegan marshmallows.
Each mug works out at about 13g of added sugar, under half the NHS daily maximum of 30g for adults, and around 20mg of caffeine. For our everyday recipes and a Christmas hot chocolate station, see hot chocolate recipes.
How long does it keep?
Kept airtight somewhere cool and dry, a dry mix like this keeps well for 2 to 3 months. Never put a date later than the shortest best-before date on your ingredients, and make sure the spoon and jar are bone dry: damp makes it clump.
Label wording
Hot chocolate mix. Tip the jar into a bowl and stir. Use 3 heaped tablespoons (about 30g) per 250ml mug. Make a paste with a splash of hot milk or water, top up and whisk. Ingredients: cocoa powder, sugar, milk powder, dark chocolate chips (check the pack), marshmallows. Best before: [date]. Store cool and dry.
Allergens
The Food Standards Agency lists 14 allergens that food businesses must declare, with each one emphasised in the ingredients list. A homemade gift isn’t a business, but copying the habit is kind. In this jar, milk is the obvious one; chocolate chips often contain soya and “may contain” nuts, so copy whatever their pack says.
How to build a hot chocolate hamper
A homemade hamper is cheaper than most ready-made ones and more personal. Start with a basket, a box or a large mug as the container, then add:
- The chocolate: a DIY jar, a bag of chocolate flakes or a good drinking chocolate.
- A mug they’ll use: a big one, ideally with a lid if they walk the dog with it.
- Toppings: marshmallows, a candy cane for stirring, a small pot of sprinkles.
- Something to stir with: a wooden spoon, a mini whisk or a milk frother.
- Something to nibble: shortbread, biscotti or gingerbread.
- A cosy extra: a paperback, a candle, bed socks or a small throw.
Pick a theme to tie it together: a “film night” hamper with popcorn, a “snow day” one with gloves, or a Danish-style evening in (our guide to hygge has more ideas). For a whole month of small treats, our wellness advent calendar works with hot chocolate days slotted in.
What to check on the label
- Cocoa content. A higher cocoa % means a richer, less sweet mug. Flaked or “real” chocolate melts into a thicker drink than powder.
- Sugar per serving. Many ready-made drinking chocolates are mostly sugar. The NHS counts more than 22.5g of total sugars per 100g as high, and adults should have no more than 30g of free sugars a day.
- Caffeine and theobromine. Cacao naturally contains both. Unsweetened cocoa powder has about 230mg of caffeine and 2,060mg of theobromine per 100g, so a mug made with 10g has roughly 23mg of caffeine. That’s far less than the 75mg in a cup of tea, but in one study the amounts found in a dark chocolate bar measurably raised alertness. Worth knowing for children and late evenings. White chocolate has none.
- Allergens. Milk and soya are common, and many sets are packed alongside nuts or gluten.
- Vegan. Look for a vegan mark: milk powder and gelatine marshmallows are the usual catches.
Our guide to healthy hot chocolate covers caffeine per mug and evening timing in more detail.
Gifts for people cutting down on sugar or alcohol
Hot chocolate makes a good present for anyone doing Dry January, who did Sober October, or who simply drinks less: a warm mug fills the evening slot a glass of wine used to. Skip the boozy hot chocolate sets for them, and the liqueur truffles in the hamper.
- Choose a dark, unsweetened cocoa or cacao and add a jar of honey or a pouch of coconut sugar, so they control the sweetness.
- Add a spice blend (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg) for flavour without extra sugar.
- Include a recipe card for an alcohol-free nightcap, like the ones in our Sober October drinks guide.
If they’re working on sugar cravings, a small, rich mug of dark hot chocolate often satisfies better than a big sweet one.
A hot chocolate gift with a twist
For someone who likes trying new things, our Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex is a ready-made reishi hot chocolate. It blends organic cacao with reishi mushroom extract, maca, coconut milk powder and organic coconut sugar. Stir 1 to 2 teaspoons into warm, not boiling, milk or water. It’s vegan, made in the UK and lab tested, and because of the cacao it contains a little natural caffeine. Think of it as a cosy evening mug rather than a remedy. Read more in our reishi cacao guide, or compare it with ceremonial cacao.
To build an evening-in hamper around it, add our Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex: magnesium bisglycinate and citrate with L-theanine and botanicals. Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. For a CBD-curious adult, our Flow CBD Oil combines broad spectrum CBD with ashwagandha and maca. Our CBD dosage guide explains how to start.
The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.
All our products are for adults only. We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding. You can send a gift straight to them by adding their address at checkout; see our shipping policy for delivery details.
