The best mushroom supplement depends on your goal. Lion’s mane is chosen for focus, reishi for evening calm, cordyceps for exercise and chaga for general wellbeing. Whichever you pick, look for a fruiting-body extract with beta-glucans listed on the label, a clear dose per serving, third-party testing and no long list of fillers.
Below: which mushroom for which goal, how to read a mushroom supplement label, powders vs capsules vs drinks, what the research shows, our pick, and safety.
Best mushroom supplement by goal
| Your goal | Mushroom people choose | Strength of human evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Focus and memory | Lion’s mane | Small trials, mixed results |
| Evening calm and wind-down | Reishi | Small trials; no good sleep trials yet |
| Exercise and energy | Cordyceps | Small, mixed trials |
| General wellbeing | Chaga, turkey tail, or a multi-mushroom blend | Mostly lab and animal research |
| Stress and low mood | Lion’s mane or reishi | Early. See mushrooms for anxiety |

How to choose: 7 things to check on the label
| Check | What good looks like |
|---|---|
| 1. Extract, not just ground powder | Mushroom cell walls are tough. Hot-water or dual extracts make the compounds easier to absorb |
| 2. Fruiting body | The label says “fruiting body”, or explains what part of the mushroom is used |
| 3. Beta-glucans listed | A percentage of beta-glucans, not just “polysaccharides”, which can include starch |
| 4. Clear dose | mg of each mushroom per serving, not a hidden “proprietary blend” |
| 5. Third-party testing | Tested for heavy metals and contaminants, with results you can see |
| 6. Short ingredients list | No unnecessary fillers, artificial sweeteners or flavourings |
| 7. Honest claims | No promises to cure, treat or “boost immunity”. Mushrooms have no authorised health claims in the UK |
Fruiting body vs mycelium
The fruiting body is the mushroom you see above ground. Mycelium is the root-like network, and many cheaper products grow it on grain such as oats or rice. When the mycelium and grain are dried and ground together, much of the product can be starch from the grain. A 2016 analysis of mushroom products found many mycelium-on-grain products were low in beta-glucans and high in starch. That doesn’t make every mycelium product poor, but it’s why a stated beta-glucan content matters.
Powder, capsules or a drink?
| Format | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Capsules | Tasteless, easy, exact dose | Lower amount per capsule |
| Powder | Flexible dose; stir into coffee, smoothies or porridge | Earthy taste |
| Drink blends (cacao, coffee, tea) | A ritual you’ll keep up; taste is taken care of | Check how much mushroom is in each serving |
| Tinctures | Quick to take | Often alcohol-based |
The best format is the one you’ll take every day. See how to make mushroom tea and mushroom coffee.
Do mushroom supplements work?
The honest answer is that the research is early. Most studies are small, use different extracts and doses, and many are in animals. Some human highlights:
- Lion’s mane: a Japanese trial in 30 older adults with mild memory problems found better cognitive scores after 16 weeks than placebo. A UK trial in young adults found small effects on speed and a trend towards lower stress.
- Reishi: in a trial of 132 adults with long-term fatigue, an extract improved fatigue and wellbeing more than placebo over 8 weeks.
- Cordyceps: small trials on exercise performance and recovery, with mixed results.
Give any mushroom supplement 4 to 8 weeks of daily use before deciding whether it suits you.
Our mushroom supplement
Our Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex is a reishi extract blended with organic cacao, maca root extract and coconut milk powder, lightly sweetened with organic coconut sugar. It’s made to be a warm evening drink: stir 1 to 2 teaspoons into warm milk 30 to 60 minutes before bed. It’s vegan, made in the UK and third-party lab tested, with no artificial sweeteners or flavourings. See reishi cacao benefits and reishi for sleep.
Side effects and who should avoid them
- Stomach upset is the most common side effect. Start with a smaller serving.
- Reishi: avoid with blood thinners or before surgery unless your doctor agrees. Rare liver problems have been reported, usually with powders or alongside alcohol.
- Chaga: high in oxalates; avoid if you’ve had kidney stones or kidney problems.
- Lion’s mane: avoid if you’re allergic to mushrooms.
- Medicines: some mushrooms may lower blood sugar or blood pressure, so check with a pharmacist if you take medicines for either.
- We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and they’re for adults only.
FAQs
What is the best mushroom supplement in the UK?
It depends on your goal. Look for a fruiting-body extract with beta-glucans listed, a clear dose, third-party testing and a short ingredients list.
Which mushroom supplement is best for anxiety?
Lion’s mane and reishi are the most popular choices, but human evidence is early. Talk to your GP if anxiety affects daily life.
Are mushroom supplements worth it?
They’re generally safe for healthy adults, but the research is still early. Choose a well-made extract and give it 4 to 8 weeks.
Is fruiting body better than mycelium?
Fruiting-body extracts usually contain more beta-glucans. Mycelium grown on grain can be mostly starch, so check for a stated beta-glucan content.
Can you take different mushroom supplements together?
Many people do, for example lion’s mane in the morning and reishi in the evening. Start one at a time so you can tell how each affects you.
Are mushroom supplements legal in the UK?
Yes. Functional mushrooms such as reishi, lion’s mane, chaga and cordyceps are legal food supplements. They contain no psilocybin.
