The best CBD capsules in the UK are broad spectrum or isolate with 0% THC, state the mg of CBD in each capsule, have a third-party batch lab report, are on the FSA’s public list of CBD products and make no health claims. As a precaution, the FSA advises healthy adults to limit CBD to 10mg a day.
Our picks: Broad Spectrum CBD Capsules in 10mg or 25mg for everyday use, and Evolabs 1500mg CBD Capsules at 30mg per softgel, our strongest capsule and the lowest cost per mg of our capsules.
- Third-party lab tested at ISO 17025 labs, with batch reports on request
- On the FSA public list, linked to validated novel food applications
- Vegan capsules: plant-based HPMC capsules or vegan softgels, no gelatine
- Made in the UK, broad spectrum with 0% THC
- For adults 18+ only
Which Evopure capsule fits your routine?
Choose by how much CBD you want each day. New to CBD, or want to stay at the FSA’s 10mg figure? Start with the 10mg capsule. Already take CBD and want more? Choose the 25mg capsule or the 30mg Evolabs softgel.
| Capsule | CBD per capsule | vs the FSA’s 10mg | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad Spectrum 10mg | 10mg | 1 capsule matches it | Starting out |
| Broad Spectrum 25mg | 25mg | 2.5 times it | Regular users |
| Evolabs 1500mg | 30mg | 3 times it | High strength, best value |
Our CBD capsules at a glance
| Broad Spectrum CBD Capsules | Evolabs 1500mg CBD Capsules | |
|---|---|---|
| Capsules per tub | 30 | 50 |
| Total CBD per tub | 300mg (10mg) or 750mg (25mg) | 1,500mg |
| Type of CBD | Broad spectrum, 0% THC | Broad spectrum, 0% THC |
| Other ingredients | Inulin (a plant fibre) | MCT (coconut) oil |
| Capsule | Size 3 HPMC vegetable capsule, tasteless | Vegan softgel |
Working out value. Compare price per mg, not price per tub: divide the price by the total mg. On that measure the Evolabs 1,500mg tub is the lowest cost per mg of our capsules, and the 25mg tub is cheaper per mg than the 10mg. Subscribe and save lowers the cost of every delivery.
Both are third-party lab tested at ISO 17025 accredited labs, with batch reports on request through our lab testing page. Both are on the FSA’s public list, linked to validated novel food applications (RP438, RP821 and RP47), so they can stay on sale while those are assessed. That isn’t full authorisation: see the FSA’s first CBD approvals explained.
Our CBD products are for adults (18+) only. We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you take any medication, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
High strength CBD capsules UK: what counts as strong?
“High strength” isn’t a legal term, so check the mg per capsule rather than the word on the tub. Capsules sold as high strength in the UK usually hold 25mg or more each. Our strongest is the Evolabs 1500mg CBD Capsule at 30mg per softgel, three times the FSA’s 10mg a day figure in one capsule.
That’s why the 10mg figure matters: one 10mg capsule a day sits at the FSA’s advice, while one 25mg or 30mg capsule goes above it. Stronger isn’t automatically better. The right strength is the lowest amount that suits you, taken consistently with food. Our guide to the strongest CBD oil in the UK covers drops, and CBD strength explained shows how to read mg and % on any label.
Full spectrum vs broad spectrum capsules: what’s legal in the UK?
Full spectrum CBD contains THC, the compound in cannabis that causes a high. Broad spectrum keeps other hemp compounds but has the THC removed, and isolate is CBD alone. All our capsules are broad spectrum with 0% THC.
The legal position, from the Home Office’s drug licensing factsheet:
- THC is a Class B controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Pure CBD on its own isn’t controlled.
- A product containing THC is only exempt if it meets all three parts of the “exempt product” definition in the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001, including no more than 1mg of THC in the container, and isn’t designed to give THC to people.
- The Home Office doesn’t confirm whether a product meets that definition, and advises businesses to test their products and take legal advice.
That’s why reputable UK brands sell broad spectrum or isolate, with a lab report showing THC. “Full spectrum” capsules carry more legal and drug test risk. See full spectrum vs broad spectrum vs isolate, what full spectrum CBD is, CBD vs THC and is CBD legal in the UK?

How to choose the best CBD capsules
Most CBD capsules look alike, so the differences are in the small print. Use this checklist for any brand.
Planning ahead? Our CBD Black Friday deals run from 27 to 30 November.
| Check | What good looks like | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Spectrum | Broad spectrum or isolate, with 0% THC on the lab report | Full spectrum. It contains THC, which is a controlled drug in the UK |
| mg per capsule | The mg of CBD in each capsule printed clearly on the front | Only a big tub total such as “1500mg”, with no per-capsule figure |
| Capsule shell | HPMC (a plant-based capsule) or a vegan softgel if you avoid animal products | Gelatine, which comes from animals, if you’re vegan or vegetarian |
| Carrier and fillers | A short list: CBD plus a carrier such as MCT oil or a plant fibre | Fillers, colours or flavourings you don’t need |
| Lab report | A third-party certificate for your batch from an ISO 17025 accredited lab, showing CBD content and THC | No report, an old report, or one from the brand’s own lab |
| FSA public list | On the FSA’s public list of CBD products linked to a novel food application. Only these should be on sale as food in England and Wales | Not on the list, or described as “FSA approved” or “FSA registered”, which isn’t how the system works |
| Honest wording | Plain facts about dose and ingredients | Promises to treat anxiety, pain, sleep problems or any condition. CBD food supplements can’t legally make medical claims |
| UK company | A UK address and someone you can contact | No address, no phone number, payment by bank transfer only |
Our best CBD oil UK checklist applies to capsules too, and our step-by-step guide shows how to read a CBD lab report, including where to find the THC result.
Watch out for fake celebrity CBD capsule ads
Be careful with social media adverts showing a TV presenter or a Dragons’ Den star. The Advertising Standards Authority lists false celebrity CBD endorsements as a known scam ad, and Which? reported a shopper charged £198 after ordering a £5 sample. A real brand has one website and a UK address.
Are CBD capsules any good?
Capsules are a good format if you want the same amount of CBD every day with no taste and no measuring. They’re less good if you want to fine-tune your amount or want something absorbed quickly.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fixed dose. You know exactly how many mg you’ve had, which makes it easy to stay at or near the FSA’s 10mg figure | Less flexible. You can’t take half a capsule easily, so steps go 10mg, 20mg, 25mg and so on |
| No taste. Useful if the earthy taste of oil puts you off | Slower. Capsules have to be digested first, so they take longer to be absorbed than oil held under the tongue |
| Easy to carry. No glass bottle, dropper or spills, and discreet at work | Variable absorption. Only a small share of swallowed CBD reaches the bloodstream, and how much varies with food and from person to person |
| Fits a routine. Take it with a meal, like any other supplement | Cost per mg. Capsules can work out dearer per mg than a high-strength oil, so compare like with like |
On absorption, food matters. A UK trial by GW Research found CBD exposure was 3.8 times higher after a high-fat meal than when fasting, with moderate to high variation between people. So take capsules with a meal and give them a fair trial at a steady amount before deciding.
For more on fair value, see why CBD oil is so expensive and how to work out cost per mg.
CBD capsule strengths: 10mg, 25mg and 1,000mg tubs explained
The big number on a tub, such as 1000mg or 1500mg, is the total CBD in the whole tub, not in each capsule. What matters day to day is the mg per capsule, which you get by dividing the total by the number of capsules.
| On the tub | Capsules | CBD per capsule | Compared with the FSA’s 10mg a day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300mg | 30 | 10mg | One capsule matches it |
| 750mg | 30 | 25mg | Two and a half times it |
| 1000mg | 30 | About 33mg | More than three times it |
| 1000mg | 60 | About 17mg | Just under twice it |
| 1500mg | 50 | 30mg | Three times it |
So a “1000mg CBD capsules” tub can mean very different daily amounts depending on the capsule count. Always check the per-capsule figure and the suggested number of capsules a day on the label.
Start low, such as one 10mg capsule a day with food, and stay there for a couple of weeks before changing anything. The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.
For amounts across every format, including how many drops or capsules make 10mg, see our CBD dosage guide.
CBD capsules vs gummies vs oil
All three are CBD food supplements taken by mouth. The differences are taste, flexibility and speed.
| Capsules | Gummies | Oil | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taste | None | Sweet | Earthy, or flavoured |
| Dose | Fixed per capsule | Fixed per gummy | Adjustable drop by drop |
| Speed | Slower, as it’s digested | Slower, as it’s digested | Can be a little quicker held under the tongue |
| Extras | Usually none | Sugar or sweeteners, gelatine in some | Carrier oil, sometimes botanicals or flavour |
Capsules suit people who want the same amount every day with no taste or sugar; oil suits people who want to fine-tune. See our full comparisons of CBD oil vs capsules and CBD oil vs gummies.
How to take CBD capsules
- With food. A review estimated only about 6% of swallowed CBD reaches the bloodstream on an empty stomach. In the GW Research trial, a high-fat meal raised the amount absorbed about 3.8 times, a low-fat meal about 2.7 times and whole milk about 2.4 times. A 2025 Dutch study of a CBD-rich hemp extract found an even bigger meal effect.
- At the same time each day. Morning or evening both work. Many people take capsules with breakfast or their evening meal.
- Give it time. A review of human studies found CBD taken by mouth reached peak blood levels within 0 to 4 hours. Try the same amount daily for 2 to 4 weeks before deciding whether it suits you.
- Swallow whole with water.
CBD capsules side effects and safety
Capsules contain the same CBD as oils, so the possible side effects are the same.
- Common side effects. A 2020 meta-analysis of 12 randomised trials with 803 participants found CBD was linked with diarrhoea, reduced appetite, sleepiness and sedation compared with placebo. Outside trials in children with epilepsy, the only side effect clearly linked to CBD was diarrhoea. These trials mostly used medicinal doses, far higher than food supplements.
- Liver. The same analysis found abnormal liver test results, but only in childhood epilepsy trials where CBD may have interacted with other medicines. The FSA says the more CBD you take over your lifetime, the more likely long-term effects such as liver damage or thyroid problems become, which is why it gives a daily figure. See is CBD bad for your liver?
- Medicines. CBD is broken down in the liver and can interact with some medicines, including blood thinners and some epilepsy drugs. Check with your GP or pharmacist first. See can CBD interact with medication?
- Who should avoid it. As a precaution, the FSA doesn’t recommend CBD for under-18s, people taking any medication, anyone trying to conceive, or people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless under medical direction. Our CBD products are for adults only, and we don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Drug tests. Any CBD product carries a small risk of a positive drug test, even a broad spectrum one. See CBD and drug tests.
Stop taking capsules and speak to your GP or pharmacist if you notice anything that worries you. For the full picture, see CBD side effects.
CBD capsules for sleep, anxiety or pain?
CBD isn’t a treatment for any condition, and CBD capsules sold as food supplements can’t claim to treat, prevent or relieve sleep problems, anxiety, pain or anything else. Be wary of any brand that says they do.
Research into CBD is early and the results are mixed. Many clinical trials use pharmaceutical CBD at hundreds of milligrams (the GW Research trial above used a single 750mg dose), which is very different from a 10mg or 25mg capsule. The NHS notes there’s no guarantee CBD food supplements are of good quality or provide any health benefits.
Our evidence summary on CBD benefits and side effects sets out what the studies do and don’t show, and our guide to choosing a CBD oil for the evening covers formats and strengths. If sleep, mood or pain problems are affecting your life, please see your GP first.
FAQs
What are the best CBD capsules in the UK?
Look for broad spectrum or isolate capsules with 0% THC, a batch lab report, a clear mg dose per capsule, and a listing on the FSA’s public list of CBD products. Avoid any brand that claims its capsules treat a health condition.
Are CBD capsules any good?
They’re a good choice if you want a fixed amount of CBD each day with no taste. The downsides are that they’re slower to be absorbed than oil held under the tongue, absorption varies from person to person, and the dose is harder to fine-tune. Take them with food.
What are the side effects of CBD capsules?
The same as other CBD products. Trials have linked CBD with diarrhoea, changes in appetite and sleepiness, mostly at medicinal doses. High doses can affect liver tests, and CBD can interact with some medicines, so check with your GP or pharmacist if you take any.
Are CBD capsules better than gummies?
Neither is better overall. Capsules have no taste and no sugar; gummies are sweet and easy to take. Both have a fixed dose and are digested, so they’re slower than oil held under the tongue.
How many CBD capsules should I take a day?
Follow the label and check the mg per capsule. The FSA advises healthy adults to have no more than 10mg of CBD a day, which is one 10mg capsule. Most people take one capsule a day with a meal. Start low, and increase slowly if you choose to go above it.
Do CBD capsules show up on a drug test?
Drug tests look for THC, not CBD. Broad spectrum and isolate capsules with 0% THC carry a low risk, but no CBD product can rule it out completely. If you’re tested for work or sport, read our guide to CBD and drug tests first.
How long do CBD capsules take to work?
They’re absorbed more slowly than oil because they’re digested first. Give them 2 to 4 weeks of daily use at the same amount before judging.
Are CBD capsules legal in the UK?
Yes, if they contain no controlled THC and are on the FSA’s public list of products linked to a novel food application.
What are high strength CBD capsules?
There’s no legal definition, but capsules sold as high strength in the UK usually contain 25mg or more of CBD each. Our strongest is the Evolabs 1500mg CBD Capsule at 30mg per softgel. That’s three times the FSA’s 10mg a day figure, so it suits people who already take CBD rather than beginners.
Can you buy full spectrum CBD capsules in the UK?
Some are sold, but full spectrum contains THC, a Class B controlled drug. A product with THC is only exempt from drug laws if it meets strict conditions, including no more than 1mg of THC in the container. That’s why most UK brands, Evopure included, sell broad spectrum or isolate with 0% THC.
Are CBD capsules better than CBD oil?
Neither is better overall. Capsules give a fixed, tasteless dose that’s easy to repeat; oil lets you adjust the amount drop by drop and often costs less per mg at higher strengths. See our CBD oil vs capsules guide for speed, absorption and value.
Are Evopure CBD capsules vegan?
Yes. Our Broad Spectrum CBD Capsules use a plant-based HPMC capsule and the Evolabs capsules are vegan softgels, so neither contains gelatine.
