Sleep Capsules: Do They Work? Ingredients, Doses and What to Check

Sleep capsules are food supplements, not sleeping pills. They usually contain magnesium, L-theanine or herbs such as chamomile, valerian and passion flower.

Sleep capsules are food supplements, not sleeping pills. They usually contain magnesium, L-theanine or herbs such as chamomile, valerian and passion flower. Some ingredients have small studies behind them, but most aren’t proven and many capsules contain less than the trials used. Sleeping pills and melatonin are prescription-only in the UK.

Sleep capsules can help some people a little. The ingredients with the best evidence are magnesium, ashwagandha and chamomile, and even those show modest effects. Check the dose of each ingredient, not just the list.

Sleep capsules vs sleeping pills: what’s the difference?

  • Sleeping pills are prescription medicines. Zopiclone, sometimes called a Z-drug, is only available on prescription, usually for a few days to a few weeks, and it’s possible to become addicted to it. The NHS says GPs now rarely prescribe sleeping pills for insomnia.
  • Pharmacy sleep aids are tablets or liquids containing an antihistamine or herbs such as valerian. The NHS says they cannot cure insomnia and should not be taken for more than 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Sleep capsules are food supplements. They are sold as food, so they can’t legally claim to treat or prevent insomnia.

Melatonin is prescription-only in the UK, mainly for short-term sleep problems in people aged 55 and over, so it can’t legally be sold in sleep capsules here. Products sold online from abroad may contain unpredictable amounts. See melatonin in the UK and melatonin vs CBD.

What’s in sleep capsules, and do the doses add up?

Ingredient Dose used in trials Evidence
Magnesium Several hundred mg a day Low quality; people fell asleep about 17 minutes faster in a small review of older adults
L-theanine 200mg a day One small 4-week trial
Chamomile Extracts in trials Better sleep quality, no change in insomnia severity
Valerian Commonly 300 to 600mg extract Mixed; many flawed studies
Passion flower As a tea in the main trial Very small trial
Lemon balm A standardised extract One 15-day pilot of 20 people, no placebo group
5-HTP 100mg a day One 12-week trial of 30 older adults
Ashwagandha 600mg extract or more, for 8 weeks Small benefit in a review of 5 trials; under FSA safety review
CBD Varies widely Small, mixed studies. See CBD for sleep

A capsule only holds a few hundred milligrams in total. A “complex” with six or seven ingredients often has only small amounts of each, below the trial doses. For the full evidence ranking, see natural sleep aids ranked by evidence.

If you’d like a fixed, tasteless dose, our Broad Spectrum CBD Capsules contain 10mg or 25mg of broad spectrum CBD with inulin in a size-3 HPMC vegetable capsule, one a day. Our Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex is a berry-flavoured drink powder, not a capsule. Sleep CBD Oil combines broad spectrum CBD with passion flower extract and a terpene blend led by myrcene. All are for adults (18+) only.

The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.

How to read a sleep capsule label

  1. Find the amount of each ingredient per daily dose. “Proprietary blend” with no amounts is a red flag.
  2. Compare it with the trial dose in the table above. A sprinkle of five herbs is not the same as one herb at the studied amount.
  3. Check magnesium as elemental magnesium in mg, with %NRV. See how to choose a magnesium supplement.
  4. Count the capsules needed for the dose on the label.
  5. Look for authorised claims only. Products promising to “cure insomnia” are breaking UK rules.
  6. Check for ingredients you should avoid, such as ashwagandha if you’re pregnant or have thyroid problems.

Vegan sleep capsules: HPMC vs gelatine

Many capsules and softgels are made from gelatine, which comes from animals. Vegan capsules usually use HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), a plant-based cellulose shell. Look for “HPMC” or “vegetable capsule” on the label, and check the fillers too. “Vegan sleeping pills” don’t exist as such: anything sold without a prescription is a supplement or a pharmacy sleep aid. Our CBD capsules use an HPMC shell, and every Evopure product is vegan. Compare options in our guide to the best CBD capsules in the UK.

Capsules vs drinks vs oils

  • Capsules: convenient, no taste, but limited space, so doses are often low and several capsules may be needed.
  • Powder drinks: room for a higher magnesium dose, and a warm drink becomes a wind-down ritual. They need mixing.
  • Oils: flexible dose, drop by drop, but not everyone likes the taste.

We chose a drink for our Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex partly for this reason: it fits bisglycinate and citrate with glycine, L-theanine and botanicals, giving 290mg of magnesium per serving. Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. If you prefer capsules, our Broad Spectrum CBD Capsules give a fixed CBD dose with no taste. See magnesium powder vs tablets and CBD oil vs capsules.

What the evidence does and doesn’t show

  • What it shows: several of these ingredients have been studied for sleep, and some small trials found modest changes in how well people rated their sleep.
  • What it doesn’t show: that a multi-ingredient capsule works, how ingredients act together, or long-term safety. Most trials are small, short and test one ingredient.
  • Claims: no ingredient here has an authorised UK health claim for sleep. For magnesium, the authorised wording is that it contributes to normal psychological function and a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. See which magnesium is best for sleep.

Safety and when to see a GP

  • Don’t combine several sleep products, alcohol, or sleeping medicines.
  • Check medicines with a pharmacist, especially antidepressants, sedatives, blood thinners and thyroid medicines.
  • Don’t drive if you feel drowsy the next morning.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: speak to your midwife or GP. We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Adults only: our products are for adults (18+) and not for children.

The NHS says to see a GP if changing your sleep habits hasn’t helped, you’ve had trouble sleeping for months, or it’s making daily life hard to cope with. Also see a GP if you snore loudly, stop breathing in your sleep or feel low. The NHS offers CBT for insomnia, which has the strongest evidence of all.

Some ingredients have small, low-quality evidence, but many capsules contain less than trial doses. They're not a substitute for good sleep habits or CBT for insomnia.

Magnesium, ashwagandha and chamomile have the most trial evidence, though effects are modest. Check each is present at a meaningful dose.

No, melatonin is prescription-only in the UK.

Yes. Look for an HPMC or vegetable capsule shell rather than gelatine, and check the other ingredients are vegan too.

Usually 30 to 60 minutes before bed, or as the label says. Take it consistently for a few weeks before judging.

Follow the label and check ingredients against any medicines you take. Speak to a GP if you need help sleeping long term.
