No CBD oil has been proven to relieve pain, so any “best CBD oil for pain” list should be read with care. The International Association for the Study of Pain doesn’t endorse cannabinoids for pain because good trials are lacking, and NICE doesn’t recommend CBD for chronic pain. If you try CBD, choose a lab-tested, THC-free product.
Below: what the evidence shows, a checklist for choosing a CBD oil, oil vs balm, how people use it, safety and interactions, and what helps pain.
What the evidence shows
| Source | Conclusion |
|---|---|
| International Association for the Study of Pain, 2021 | Doesn’t endorse cannabinoids for pain, because high-quality evidence is lacking |
| NICE, 2019 | Don’t offer CBD for chronic pain except in a clinical trial |
| Acute back pain trial, 2021 | 400mg of CBD in A&E was no better than placebo |
| Fibromyalgia study, 2019 | Inhaled CBD without THC was no better than placebo |

How to choose a CBD oil: 7 checks
- On the FSA public list, as UK CBD food products must be.
- A recent, batch-specific lab report showing CBD content and THC not detected. See how to read a lab report.
- Broad spectrum or isolate if you want to avoid THC. See full spectrum vs broad spectrum.
- Clear mg of CBD per bottle and per drop. See CBD strength explained.
- Fair cost per mg. See why CBD costs what it does.
- No medical claims: a brand saying its oil treats pain is breaking UK rules.
- Clear ingredients, including any botanicals, so you can check for allergies and interactions.

Oil, capsules or balm?
| Form | How people use it |
|---|---|
| Oil | Under the tongue; easy to adjust the amount |
| Capsules | A fixed daily amount, no taste |
| Balm | Massaged into a specific area; the massage itself can ease tight muscles |
See CBD oil vs capsules and CBD balm for muscles.
Our range
- Relief CBD Oil: broad spectrum CBD with turmeric and black pepper. See CBD and turmeric.
- Muscle and Joint Support CBD Balm: for massaging into muscles after activity.
- Broad Spectrum CBD Oil and capsules: for a simple daily routine.
All are broad spectrum, and every batch is tested by an independent lab. They’re food supplements and cosmetics, not medicines.
Safety and medicine interactions
- Start around 10mg a day. The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.
- CBD can interact with some painkillers and pain medicines, including some opioids, amitriptyline, duloxetine and blood thinners. Ask your pharmacist. See can CBD interact with medication?
- Turmeric can also interact with blood thinners.
- Not advised in pregnancy, breastfeeding or for under-18s.
What helps different kinds of pain
| Type | What usually helps |
|---|---|
| Muscle aches after exercise | Rest, gentle movement, heat or ice, massage |
| Back pain and sciatica | Staying active, exercises, heat |
| Joint pain | Exercise, weight management, painkillers as advised, physiotherapy |
| Long-term (chronic) pain | Exercise programmes, psychological therapies, some medicines; see your GP |
See a GP for pain that’s severe, lasts more than a few weeks, or comes with other symptoms like weight loss, fever or numbness.
