The best teacher Christmas gifts are small, personal and easy to use up: a handwritten card or note from your child, a treat such as good chocolate or a hot chocolate, or a voucher from a whole-class collection. Thoughtful beats expensive. Check your school’s gifts policy first, as some schools limit what staff can accept. Checked November 2026.

What do teachers really want for Christmas?

Teachers say the gift they value most is a card or note from the child, ideally with a line from you about what difference they made this term. In an Ipsos MORI survey of 1,000 teachers in England and Wales for Tes, a card, note or drawing from a pupil was named the best gift received (25%), ahead of chocolates (12%).

The survey is from 2005, but a written thank-you costs nothing and doesn’t date: the words matter more than the price. The NHS lists helping other people, including simply saying thank you, among its five steps to mental wellbeing, and a specific thank you is exactly that.

  • Be specific: “Sam reads at bedtime now because of you” beats “Thanks for everything”.
  • Let the child do it: a drawing, a few words in their own writing or a photo of something they made.
  • Add a small treat if you like: something they can eat, drink or use up over the holidays.

Teacher Christmas gift ideas by budget

Budget Ideas Good for
Free A handwritten card, a child’s drawing, a thank-you email to the head copied to the teacher Every teacher
Under £5 A bar of good chocolate, a hot chocolate sachet, a nice pen, a tea selection Teachers and support staff
£5 to £10 A mug with hot chocolate, a candle, hand cream, a plant, a book token The class teacher
Class collection A voucher for a shop, bookshop or coffee chain, with a card the whole class signs A joint gift

Male teachers and secondary staff get the same rule: consumables over clutter. Coffee, a hot chocolate, a good notebook or a book token all work. Mugs and “best teacher” ornaments are kind, but most teachers already have a cupboard full. More small ideas in Secret Santa wellness gifts and wellness stocking fillers.

Teacher gifts from the whole class

A whole-class gift is usually a voucher bought from a voluntary collection, with one card signed by every child. It saves the teacher a pile of mugs and lets families who can give a little join in. Keep it optional and private: nobody should know who gave what.

  1. Check the school’s policy before you start, especially on vouchers and total value.
  2. Suggest, don’t set, an amount and make clear that the card alone is fine.
  3. Include the support staff: teaching assistants and anyone else who works with the class.
  4. Choose a flexible voucher (a bookshop, a supermarket or a high street gift card) rather than cash.
  5. Make the card the star: every child signs or draws something, and a parent adds a short thank you.

Gifts for teaching assistants and other school staff

Teaching assistants, nursery key workers, lunchtime staff, the office team and the caretaker all make a child’s year work, and they’re often forgotten. A card naming what they did, plus a small treat such as chocolate, tea or a hot chocolate, is plenty. If you’re organising a class collection, split it between the teacher and the support staff. Term can be a tiring stretch for school staff, so our guides to stress at work and Christmas stress may be a kinder read than another mug.

Homemade teacher Christmas gifts

Cheap teacher gifts that children can help make are often the ones that get kept. A few easy ideas:

  • A hot chocolate jar: layer hot chocolate powder, mini marshmallows and chocolate chips in a jar with a label and a recipe tag. Our hot chocolate gifts guide has the steps, and hot chocolate station ideas has topping lists.
  • Biscuits or fudge: wrapped in a box with every ingredient written on the label, as many people have food allergies. If in doubt, choose something shop-bought with a full label.
  • A plant cutting in a decorated pot, or paperwhite bulbs to flower in January.
  • A “class memories” page: a drawing of the class or a few lines about the best day of the term.

If a teacher avoids milk, our dairy-free hot chocolate guide explains what to check on the label.

Can teachers accept gifts? School gift policies

Yes, in most schools teachers can accept small Christmas gifts, but each school or academy trust sets its own rules. According to the teachers’ support service Edapt, the Department for Education leaves it to the headteacher and governing body or local authority to decide, and some policies cap gift values or ask staff to declare larger gifts.

  • Check with the school: look for a gifts and hospitality policy on the website, or ask the office.
  • Cash is often not allowed: choose a voucher or a gift instead.
  • Big gifts can be awkward: academy trusts are expected to keep a register of gifts that could affect judgement, and lavish presents can put a teacher in a difficult spot.
  • Private schools sometimes set their own limits for parents, so read any letter home carefully.

Questions, answered

A handwritten card or note from your child, with a line about what difference the teacher made, plus a small treat they can use up, such as chocolate, tea or a hot chocolate. A voucher from a class collection also works well.

There's no set amount, and a card alone is enough. Many parents choose a treat under £10 or join a voluntary class collection. Check the school's gifts policy, as some limit what staff can accept.

It depends on the school. Each school or academy trust sets its own gifts policy; some ask staff to declare gifts above a set value, and academy trusts keep a register for gifts that could affect judgement. Small Christmas gifts are usually fine.
