“Damp” drinking means cutting down on alcohol rather than quitting: fewer drinking days, smaller or lower-strength drinks, and alcohol-free swaps. It’s a practical middle ground between drinking as usual and going dry. The UK guideline is no more than 14 units a week, spread over three or more days.
Below: why cutting down helps, practical damp-drinking tips, alcohol-free evening swaps, and a simple mocktail.
Why drinking less helps
| Area | What alcohol does |
|---|---|
| Sleep | Helps you fall asleep but disrupts the second half of the night. See why you wake at 3am |
| Mood the next day | Many people feel anxious or low after a heavy night, sometimes called “hangxiety”; studies link worse hangovers with worse next-day mood |
| Energy | Poor sleep and dehydration leave you tired |
| Long-term health | The NHS links regular heavy drinking with liver disease, several cancers and heart problems |

- Plan alcohol-free days each week, and decide your limit before you start.
- Go smaller: a bottle instead of a pint, a small glass of wine instead of a large one.
- Choose lower-strength drinks; check the ABV.
- Eat first and alternate each drink with water or a soft drink.
- Tell friends you’re cutting down.
- Swap the habit, not just the drink: a new evening ritual helps when the urge is about winding down.
Alcohol-free evening swaps
| Instead of | Try |
|---|---|
| A glass of red after work | A warm reishi hot chocolate. See reishi cacao as an alcohol alternative |
| A nightcap | Chamomile tea or a warm magnesium drink |
| A cocktail | An alcohol-free sour (below) or a sparkling botanical drink |
| Beer at the pub | Alcohol-free beer, which is now widely available |
Some people add CBD to their evening routine. Don’t mix CBD with alcohol on the same evening. See CBD and alcohol.
A simple alcohol-free sour
- Shake 50ml fresh lemon juice, 25ml honey or maple syrup, and a splash of aquafaba or egg white with ice.
- Strain into a glass and top with soda water or ginger beer.
- Garnish with a twist of lemon or a few berries.

The FSA’s 10mg a day figure for CBD is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.
When to get help
If you find it hard to cut down, drink to cope with stress, or feel shaky or sweaty when you stop, talk to your GP. Don’t stop suddenly if you drink heavily every day, as withdrawal can be dangerous. Drinkline is free on 0300 123 1110. If you want a full month off, see our Dry January guide. We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
