CBD isolate is pure cannabidiol: a white crystalline powder that is usually 99% CBD or more, with every other hemp compound removed. It contains no THC, has no taste or smell, and is used in gummies, drinks, flavoured oils and capsules. It’s the simplest form of CBD, but it lacks the other cannabinoids and terpenes found in broad spectrum.
Here’s how isolate is made, what it’s used for, how it compares with broad and full spectrum, and whether it’s right for you.
How is CBD isolate made?
- Extraction: CBD and other compounds are pulled from hemp using CO₂ or ethanol.
- Winterisation: the extract is chilled to separate out fats and waxes, which are filtered off.
- Decarboxylation: gentle heat converts CBDA, the raw acid form, into CBD.
- Distillation: the oil is refined into a concentrated CBD distillate.
- Crystallisation: CBD is crystallised out of the distillate, washed and dried, leaving a white powder or crystals.
CBD distillate is the stage before isolate: highly refined, but still containing small amounts of other compounds. Read more: how CBD oil is made and what is CBD distillate?
What is CBD isolate used for?
Because it has no taste or smell and dissolves in fats and oils, isolate is popular with manufacturers. You’ll find it in:
- Gummies and sweets, where an earthy taste would be unwelcome
- Drinks and coffee
- Flavoured oils and capsules
- Vape liquids
- Skincare and balms
People choose isolate when they want CBD only, have to avoid any trace of other cannabinoids, or simply dislike the taste of hemp.
Pros and cons of CBD isolate
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| No THC | No other cannabinoids or terpenes |
| No taste or smell | No “entourage effect”, if that matters to you |
| Simple, consistent ingredient | Products made with it vary widely in quality |
| Lowest drug-test risk | Single doses in studies show a “bell-shaped” response, where more isn’t always better |
CBD isolate vs broad spectrum vs full spectrum
| Isolate | Broad spectrum | Full spectrum | |
|---|---|---|---|
| CBD | 99%+ pure | Yes | Yes |
| Other cannabinoids and terpenes | No | Yes | Yes |
| THC | None | Removed | Small amount |
| Taste | None | Mildly earthy | Earthy |
| Drug test risk | Lowest | Very low | Higher |
Broad spectrum sits between the two: the wider plant profile without THC, which is why it is the type we use. Read the full comparison: full spectrum vs broad spectrum vs isolate, and what is full spectrum CBD?
Is CBD isolate effective?
Much of the human research on CBD has used purified CBD, so isolate is far from inactive. The question is whether whole-plant extracts work better. Supporters of the “entourage effect” say they do, and some observational research found people using plant extracts needed lower doses. But there are no good head-to-head trials, so it isn’t proven either way. See the entourage effect explained.
Does CBD isolate contain THC?
Pure isolate shouldn’t contain any THC. But finished products can be poorly made or mislabelled, so always check the batch lab report shows THC as “ND” (not detected). See how to read CBD lab reports and does CBD show up on a drug test?
Is CBD isolate legal in the UK?
Yes. According to the Home Office, pure CBD as an isolated substance isn’t a controlled drug. CBD food products, including those made with isolate, also need to be linked to an application on the FSA public list. Buying raw isolate powder to make your own products is a grey area for food safety, so stick to finished products from established brands. See is CBD legal in the UK?
How much CBD isolate should you take?
The same as any other CBD: start low, around 10mg a day, and increase slowly if needed. The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication. FAQs
What does CBD isolate mean?
It means CBD that has been separated from every other compound in the hemp plant, leaving a powder that is usually 99% pure CBD or more.
Is CBD isolate THC free?
Pure isolate contains no THC. Check the batch lab report of any finished product shows THC as not detected.
Is CBD isolate better than broad spectrum?
Not necessarily. Isolate is pure CBD with no taste; broad spectrum adds other cannabinoids and terpenes without THC. There are no good trials showing either is clearly better.
Is CBD isolate safe?
CBD is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include tiredness and stomach upset, and it can interact with some medicines, so check with a pharmacist if you take any.
Does CBD isolate expire?
Yes. Isolate powder is quite stable if kept cool, dry and dark, but finished products have a best-before date, usually one to two years.
Does Evopure use CBD isolate?
No. All Evopure CBD products, including the Evolabs flavoured oils, are broad spectrum with 0% THC.
