Melatonin has more evidence for sleep than CBD, but the effect is modest: a review of 19 trials found it helped people fall asleep about 7 minutes faster. It’s best for shifting sleep timing, such as jet lag, and is prescription-only in the UK. CBD can be bought legally, but its sleep evidence is small and mixed.
Below: a side-by-side comparison, what each is best for, UK rules, safety, and whether you can take them together.
Melatonin vs CBD at a glance
| Melatonin | CBD | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A hormone the body makes in darkness | A compound from hemp |
| UK status | Prescription-only medicine | Legal food supplement if on the FSA public list |
| Sleep evidence | 19 trials: about 7 minutes faster to sleep, 8 minutes more sleep | Small, mixed studies |
| Best for | Jet lag, shift work, body-clock problems, over-55s with short-term insomnia | Some people use it as part of an evening wind-down |
| Common side effects | Headache, morning grogginess, vivid dreams | Drowsiness, diarrhoea at higher doses |
Melatonin: what it’s good for
Melatonin signals to your body that it’s night. It’s more of a timing signal than a sedative, which is why it suits jet lag and delayed body clocks better than general insomnia. In the UK it’s mainly prescribed as 2mg slow-release tablets for adults 55 and over with short-term insomnia, or by specialists for some other groups. Overseas melatonin gummies have been found to contain very different amounts from their labels. See melatonin in the UK.
CBD: what the sleep research shows
Studies of CBD for sleep are mostly small, short or without a placebo group, and results are mixed. A large 2024 US study compared CBD products with 5mg melatonin and found all improved sleep scores, but it had no placebo group, so it can’t show either worked better than expectation. See CBD for sleep and best CBD oil for sleep.
Our Sleep CBD Oil combines broad spectrum CBD with passion flower for an evening routine. The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.
Which suits your sleep problem?
| Problem | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Jet lag or shift work | Melatonin, on prescription; light exposure timing |
| Can’t switch off at night | A wind-down routine; some people add CBD or magnesium |
| Waking in the night for months | See your GP; CBT for insomnia has the strongest evidence |
| Over 55 with short-term insomnia | Ask your GP about prescribed melatonin |

Can you take melatonin and CBD together?
There’s no well-studied interaction, but both can cause drowsiness, so together they may make you sleepier the next morning. If you’re prescribed melatonin, ask the prescriber or your pharmacist before adding CBD, start with a low dose, and don’t drive if you feel drowsy.

- CBD: can interact with some medicines. See CBD and medication.
