CBD and HRV for Runners: Does It Help Recovery? What the Research Shows

There are no human trials of CBD and heart rate variability (HRV), so CBD isn’t proven to raise your HRV or readiness score.

CBD, HRV & Sleep for Runners: Lift Your Readiness Without Stimulants

Last updated: October 2026

There are no human trials of CBD and heart rate variability (HRV), so CBD isn’t proven to raise your HRV or readiness score. What is known: in a 2025 pilot study, 300mg of CBD before a two-mile run made runners feel calmer without slowing them, and single doses lowered blood pressure slightly in lab studies.

Below: what HRV tells runners, the CBD research, an evening routine for better recovery, anti-doping rules, and safety.

What HRV tells runners

Heart rate variability is the small variation in time between heartbeats. Higher HRV, compared with your own baseline, usually means your body is recovered; a drop can point to fatigue, illness, poor sleep, alcohol or stress. Watches and rings use overnight HRV to produce readiness or recovery scores. Track your own trend over weeks rather than comparing with other people.

CBD, heart rate and running: the research

Study What it found
Two-mile time trial, 2025 (12 runners, pilot) 300mg CBD two hours before running increased calm feelings and lowered perceived effort at halfway, without slowing times or upsetting stomachs
Blood pressure, 2017 (9 healthy men, single 600mg dose) Lowered resting blood pressure slightly and blunted the rise during stress; heart rate went up a little
Blood pressure, 2020 (7 days of 600mg) The resting effect faded after a week, but a smaller rise during stress persisted
HRV in people No published trials

These used doses far above typical supplement amounts. For sport more broadly, see CBD for muscle recovery.

What actually raises HRV

Factor Effect on HRV
Sleep Short or poor sleep lowers it; consistency helps
Training load Hard blocks lower it; easy weeks and rest days restore it
Alcohol Lowers overnight HRV noticeably, even at moderate amounts. See CBD and alcohol
Late meals and caffeine Can lower overnight HRV
Illness and stress Often drop HRV before you notice symptoms
Aerobic fitness Raises baseline HRV over months

A runner’s evening routine

  1. Finish caffeine by early afternoon. See caffeine and how long it lasts.
  2. Eat a recovery meal with protein and carbohydrate, not too late.
  3. Wind down for 30 to 60 minutes: dim lights, stretching or a warm shower.
  4. If you use CBD or magnesium, take them as part of this routine, consistently, so you can see any effect in your own data. Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. See magnesium for muscle pain.
  5. Keep a consistent bedtime, even after evening sessions. See late-night sport and sleep.

Try any change for two to three weeks and compare your HRV trend with the weeks before.

CBD and anti-doping rules

CBD itself was removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list in 2018, but THC and all other cannabinoids remain banned in competition. A CBD product containing traces of THC or other cannabinoids could cause a positive test. If you’re tested, UK Anti-Doping advises extreme caution with CBD products. Choose broad spectrum or isolate, check the batch lab report, and understand that no product is risk-free. See CBD and drug tests.

Safety

  • Blood pressure: CBD can lower it slightly; take care if you’re prone to dizziness, especially after long runs.
  • Medicines: check with a pharmacist. See CBD and medication.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: we don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.

FAQs

Does CBD improve HRV?

It hasn’t been tested in human trials. Sleep, training load and alcohol have a much bigger, proven effect on HRV.

Does CBD affect running performance?

In a small 2025 pilot study, 300mg before a two-mile run made runners feel calmer and the effort feel easier, without changing their times.

Is CBD banned in sport?

CBD itself isn’t, but THC and other cannabinoids are banned in competition, so trace contamination could cause a positive test.

When should runners take CBD?

Most use it in the evening as part of a wind-down routine. Be consistent so you can judge any effect in your own data.

Does CBD lower heart rate?

Not in studies; a single high dose lowered blood pressure slightly and raised heart rate a little.
