Can’t Sleep After Gaming? How to Wind Down (GTA 6 Launch Night)

If you can’t sleep after gaming, it’s usually because a tense game keeps your body alert, a late session pushes your bedtime back, and caffeine from energy drinks or coffee is still working. Casual gaming rarely harms sleep.

Updated November 2026. Release details checked 6 November 2026.

If you can’t sleep after gaming, it’s usually because a tense game keeps your body alert, a late session pushes your bedtime back, and caffeine from energy drinks or coffee is still working. Casual gaming rarely harms sleep. A set stop time, a 20-minute screen-free wind-down and a caffeine cut-off about 6 hours before bed help most.

For a caffeine-free drink after a session, Evopure’s Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex is a berry drink powder with 290mg of magnesium (77% NRV) per 4.75g serving. With Grand Theft Auto VI out on 19 November, here’s how to enjoy launch night without wrecking the rest of your week.

Why can’t I sleep after gaming?

Most people can’t sleep after gaming for four reasons: the game raises your heart rate and alertness, the session runs past your usual bedtime, caffeine from earlier drinks is still active, and bright screens close to bed make you feel more awake. One of these alone may not matter; stacked together on a late night, they usually do.

  • Arousal. Fast, competitive or scary games keep you alert, and your body needs time to come down: the tired but wired feeling.
  • Timing. “One more match” is the classic delay. Staying up to claim time for yourself has a name: revenge bedtime procrastination.
  • Caffeine. Energy drinks, coffee and cola can still be in your system hours later. Our guide to how long caffeine lasts explains the half-life.
  • Screen light. The NHS advises against screens right before bed because they can keep you more awake. Whether blue light glasses help is less clear-cut than the adverts suggest.

Watching sport late works the same way: see late-night sport and sleep.

Do video games cause insomnia?

For most adults, no. Research suggests casual gaming has little effect on sleep, while long, late sessions and very exciting games push sleep later and can lower its quality. Insomnia is a longer-term problem: the NHS calls it long-term when it lasts 3 months or more. Late gaming more often means simply less sleep.

Study Who What it found
Systematic review, Sleep Medicine, 2024 26 studies of adults Excessive gaming was linked to poorer sleep and later sleep times; habitual or casual gaming was not. Arousing games before bed delayed sleep onset.
Online survey, Sleep Science, 2024 3,481 adult gamers aged 18 to 74 81.2% said gaming delayed their bedtime; 58.7% rated their sleep quality fair to very poor.
Sleep experiment, Sleep Medicine, 2025 18 adults who rarely played games An hour of an action game before bed, for three nights, did not worsen sleep measured overnight with sleep monitoring, compared with watching TV.

The survey relied on self-report, so it shows a link rather than cause. The small experiment used non-gamers and a fixed one-hour session, which is very different from a six-hour launch-night marathon. Gaming itself isn’t the enemy: the late finish, the adrenaline and the energy drinks are. If you’ve struggled to sleep for weeks regardless of gaming, read our guide to insomnia and speak to your GP.

How to sleep after gaming: a 20-minute wind-down

To sleep after gaming, stop at a save point, put the controller and phone away, dim the lights and give yourself 20 minutes of quiet before getting into bed. A warm caffeine-free drink, slow breathing and writing down where you got to help your brain let go of the game.

Time What to do Why it helps
30 minutes before Set a “last mission” alarm A natural place to stop
Minute 0 Save, switch the console off fully, phone on charge out of reach No menus, clips or group chats pulling you back in
Minutes 0 to 5 Lights down; make a warm caffeine-free drink Dim light and a calm routine signal the end of the day
Minutes 5 to 10 Teeth, wash, get the room cool and dark A familiar routine helps you feel sleepy
Minutes 10 to 15 Slow breathing or a gentle stretch Helps your heart rate settle after a tense game
Minutes 15 to 20 Write down where you got to and tomorrow’s plan; read a paper book Stops you replaying the game in your head

Try 4-7-8 breathing for the slow breathing step. For a longer version, our bedtime routine for adults sets out a full 60-minute wind-down, and how to fall asleep fast covers what to do if you’re still awake after 20 minutes in bed.

Planning a GTA 6 launch night (19 November)

Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI for Thursday 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with pre-load opening on 10 November. Check Rockstar’s site for the exact unlock time. Evopure isn’t connected with Rockstar Games. Launch day is a Thursday, so decide in advance which kind of night it will be:

  • Pre-load early so you’re not waiting up for the download.
  • Pick your plan. Either set a stop time that still gives you 7 hours in bed, or book Friday off and plan a lie-in. An all-nighter before work is the worst of both.
  • Caffeine cut-off. The NHS advises no tea or coffee for at least 6 hours before bed. For a 1am bedtime, that means your last energy drink by about 7pm.
  • Eat a proper meal in the early evening rather than grazing on sweets, and keep water next to you.
  • Get up every hour. Stand, stretch and look away from the screen for a few minutes.
  • Don’t drive tired the next day. The NHS says not to drive when you feel sleepy.
  • Get back on schedule the next night: get up at your usual time, get daylight in the morning and keep any nap under 30 minutes.

Energy drinks vs a calmer evening drink

A 250ml energy drink has about 80mg of caffeine and a 500ml can about twice that, so two big cans on launch night is more than a strong coffee. For the evening, a caffeine-free drink or one with only a little natural caffeine is the better choice.

Drink Caffeine (approx.) Late-night pick?
Energy drink, 500ml can About 160mg No: check the label
Mug of instant coffee 100mg (filter and coffee-shop coffee can be more) No
Energy drink, 250ml can 80mg No
Cup of tea 75mg No
Can of cola 40mg Not after early evening
Homemade hot chocolate (10g cocoa) About 23mg Earlier in the evening
Reishi Cacao, 8g serving A little, under 20mg at most (not lab measured) Earlier in the evening
Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex, 4.75g None Yes
Chamomile or other herbal tea None Yes

Coffee, tea, cola and 250ml energy drink figures are NHS estimates; the 500ml figure doubles the 250ml can. Reishi Cacao has not been tested for caffeine: the “under 20mg at most” figure is a worst-case estimate that treats the whole 8g serving as cocoa, at about 2.3mg of caffeine per gram of cocoa. Checked November 2026.

European food safety experts consider up to 400mg of caffeine a day safe for healthy adults, but say even 100mg close to bedtime may affect sleep in some people. In a home sleep study, 400mg taken 6 hours before bed still disturbed sleep. More in our guides to energy drinks and caffeine in hot chocolate.

Our Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex is a reishi hot chocolate: per 8g serving (2 teaspoons), 0.5g reishi, 0.5g maca and 0.3g cinnamon with cocoa. It contains a little natural caffeine from the cocoa, so we’d have it earlier in the evening rather than last thing. Later on, Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex has no caffeine. See reishi cacao and magnesium for sleep for more.

Some adults already use CBD in their evening routine: see best CBD oil for sleep for how to choose. CBD is for adults only, not for under 18s. The FSA advises healthy adults to take no more than 10mg of CBD a day: about 0.2ml of the 500mg (0.1ml of the 1,000mg) gives 10mg.

The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.

Next step

Sleep CBD Oil With Passion Flower

If you already use CBD in the evening, Sleep CBD Oil is broad spectrum CBD with passionflower for a wind-down routine: about 0.2ml of the 500mg gives 10mg of CBD (half a pipette is 17.5mg, with 70mg passionflower extract). Third-party lab tested, vegan and made in the UK.

Questions, answered

Not usually, in moderation. Research suggests casual gaming has little effect on adult sleep. Problems come from long sessions that run past your bedtime, very exciting games right before bed and late caffeine. Finish at a set time and give yourself 20 screen-free minutes before bed.

Aim to stop at least 20 to 30 minutes before you want to be asleep, and longer after a tense competitive game. The NHS suggests relaxing for at least an hour before bed, so if you often lie awake, stop an hour before.

Screen light plays a part, and the NHS advises against screens right before bed, but for gaming the bigger factors are usually how exciting the game is, how late you play and caffeine. Dimming the screen helps a little; stopping earlier helps more.

One late night won't do lasting harm for most healthy adults, but you'll feel it the next day. Don't drive while sleepy, avoid stacking caffeine, keep any nap under 30 minutes and go to bed at your usual time the following night.

Choose something caffeine-free: water, a herbal tea such as chamomile, or warm milk. Evopure's Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex is a caffeine-free berry drink with 290mg of magnesium per 4.75g serving. Avoid energy drinks, coffee, tea and cola in the 6 hours before bed.
