Waking up tired is often down to sleep inertia, the normal grogginess that usually wears off within 15 to 60 minutes. If you still feel exhausted after 8 hours, the usual causes are poor-quality sleep, an irregular sleep schedule, alcohol or caffeine, a stuffy or warm bedroom, or a sleep disorder such as sleep apnoea.

Below: the common causes, how to wake up feeling more refreshed, and when to see a GP. For tiredness that lasts all day, see why am I always tired?

Why do I wake up tired?

Sleep inertia Groggy for up to an hour, then fine Daylight, water, movement, don’t snooze

What is sleep inertia?

Sleep inertia is the groggy, slow feeling when you first wake up. A 2019 review explained that it affects thinking and reaction times, then fades the longer you’re awake. It’s stronger if you’re short of sleep or wake from deep sleep, which is why the snooze button and long naps can leave you feeling worse. See how long should a power nap be?

Could it be sleep apnoea?

Obstructive sleep apnoea is when your breathing stops and starts while you sleep. According to the NHS, signs include loud snoring, noisy breathing, gasping or choking, waking up a lot, and feeling very sleepy during the day. It’s more common if you’re overweight, drink alcohol or smoke. It’s important to get checked, because it can be treated and untreated sleep apnoea raises the risk of other health problems. How to wake up feeling refreshed

  1. Keep the same wake time every day, including weekends.
  2. Skip the snooze button. Set the alarm for when you actually need to get up.
  3. Get daylight straight away. Open the curtains or step outside. In winter, a sunrise alarm clock can help. See tired in winter.
  4. Drink a glass of water and move about.
  5. Wait a little before caffeine if your morning coffee leads to a crash. See coffee crash.
  6. Build a calming evening routine and keep your bedroom cool and dark. See how to sleep better.

An evening drink can be a simple cue to wind down. Our Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex is a berry bedtime drink with L-theanine, and magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

When to see a GP

See a GP if you wake up tired most days despite good sleep habits, feel very sleepy in the day, have signs of sleep apnoea, or struggle with insomnia. They may check for causes such as low iron, low vitamin B12, an underactive thyroid or depression. See iron deficiency symptoms.

FAQs

Why do I wake up tired after 8 hours of sleep?

Usually poor-quality sleep rather than too little. Alcohol, caffeine, an irregular schedule, a warm bedroom, stress or sleep apnoea can all leave you unrefreshed.

How long does morning grogginess last?

Sleep inertia usually wears off within 15 to 60 minutes, and is worse if you’re short of sleep or wake from deep sleep.

Is it bad to hit snooze?

Snoozing breaks up your last bit of sleep and can make grogginess worse. It’s better to set the alarm for when you need to get up.

Can sleep apnoea make you wake up tired?

Yes. Breathing that stops and starts disrupts sleep, causing tiredness, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness. See a GP if you snore loudly or gasp in your sleep.
