Morning anxiety is waking up with a racing heart, dread or a busy mind before the day has even started. It’s common. Your stress hormone cortisol naturally rises sharply after waking, and stress, poor sleep, caffeine and alcohol can amplify it. A slow start, daylight, breakfast and moving your body help. See a GP if it’s daily.

Below: why anxiety is worse in the morning, symptoms, a 15-minute morning routine to calm it, what to avoid, and when to get help.

Why do I wake up with anxiety?

Reason What happens
The cortisol awakening response Cortisol naturally rises sharply in the first 30 to 45 minutes after waking to get you going. If you’re already stressed, that surge can feel like anxiety
Worry about the day Your mind jumps straight to tasks, problems or a difficult meeting
Poor sleep A broken night makes you more sensitive to stress. See how to sleep better
Alcohol the night before Next-day anxiety is common. See hangxiety
Low blood sugar Going a long time without food can make you shaky
Caffeine on an empty stomach Can add to a racing heart and jitters
An anxiety disorder Ongoing worry that’s hard to control may be generalised anxiety disorder

A 15-minute morning routine for anxiety

Time What to do
Minute 1 Before you reach for your phone, take 5 slow breaths with a longer out-breath. See box breathing
Minutes 2 to 3 Name what you’re feeling: “This is my body’s morning stress response. It will settle”
Minutes 3 to 5 Open the curtains and drink a glass of water
Minutes 5 to 10 Get outside or stand by a window. A short walk or stretch burns off adrenaline
Minutes 10 to 15 Eat something, even small: toast, yoghurt or a banana. Have coffee with food, not before

Then pick just one priority for the day. See a morning routine for energy.

Many people also build a calm daily routine. Our Flow CBD Oil combines broad spectrum CBD with ashwagandha and maca and is made for daytime. The FSA’s 10mg a day figure for CBD is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.

What to do the night before

  • Write tomorrow’s to-do list so your brain doesn’t have to hold it overnight. See how to stop overthinking.
  • Lay out what you need: clothes, bag, lunch.
  • Go easy on alcohol and keep caffeine to before midday.
  • Keep the same bedtime and wake time.
  • Charge your phone outside the bedroom so it isn’t the first thing you see.

Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function. Our Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex is a bedtime drink many people use to wind down. See anxiety at night.

When to get help

See a GP if you wake with anxiety most days, it affects your work or relationships, or you also feel low. Adults in England can refer themselves to NHS Talking Therapies for CBT. If you’re having thoughts of harming yourself, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, or Samaritans on 116 123.
