The best magnesium glycinate supplement states its elemental magnesium per daily serving, uses magnesium bisglycinate rather than a blend topped up with oxide, and keeps you within the NHS guide of 400mg a day from supplements. Our pick, Evopure Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex, gives 290mg of magnesium (77% NRV) per 4.75g berry drink.

View productWhat is the best magnesium glycinate supplement in the UK?
The best magnesium glycinate supplement is one that tells you the elemental magnesium per daily serving, uses fully reacted magnesium bisglycinate, and gives a dose you can keep within the NHS guide of 400mg or less a day from supplements.
The supplements below give 120mg to 384mg of magnesium per daily serving. The NHS says adult men need 300mg a day and women 270mg, and most of that should come from your diet: nuts, seeds, wholegrains and leafy greens.
Magnesium glycinate and magnesium bisglycinate are the same compound; see magnesium glycinate vs bisglycinate. For what the form is and its side effects, read our magnesium glycinate guide. If you are choosing between forms rather than brands, start with the best magnesium supplement in the UK.

How do you choose a good magnesium glycinate supplement?
Choose a magnesium glycinate supplement by the elemental magnesium on the label, not the headline compound weight. Magnesium bisglycinate is only about 14% magnesium by weight, so “1,000mg magnesium glycinate” can mean as little as 140mg of actual magnesium. The NHS says 400mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm.
- Elemental vs compound mg: look for “magnesium (elemental)” or “providing X mg magnesium” with a % NRV. The NRV for magnesium is 375mg.
- Bisglycinate vs “buffered” or “glycinate complex”: some products mix bisglycinate with magnesium oxide to raise the mg per capsule. That is legal and common, but oxide is a different, less gentle form; the ingredient list will say so. See magnesium oxide.
- Blends: a “3-in-1” or complex adds citrate or malate. That isn’t worse, just different; see magnesium complex and glycinate vs citrate vs threonate.
- Dose vs the NHS guide: add up every supplement you take, including a multivitamin, and stay at 400mg a day or less. Our how much magnesium per day guide has the maths.
- Fillers and extras: capsules often list HPMC and an anti-caking agent such as magnesium stearate; powders may add flavouring and sweetener.
- Format: capsules travel well; powders suit people who dislike tablets. See magnesium powder vs tablets.
No magnesium product can claim to help you sleep in the UK. The authorised claims include “contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue” and “contributes to normal psychological function”. For the sleep research, see best magnesium for sleep.
The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.
The FSA advises healthy adults to take no more than 10mg of CBD a day: about 0.2ml of the 500mg (0.1ml of the 1,000mg) gives 10mg. Adults only. Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex contains a little natural caffeine from the cacao.
Who should not take magnesium glycinate, or check first?
Most healthy adults can take magnesium glycinate within the NHS guide of 400mg a day from supplements. People with kidney disease, those on certain antibiotics, bisphosphonates or thyroid medicine, and anyone pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a GP or pharmacist first, because magnesium can build up or block absorption.
- Kidney disease: your kidneys clear extra magnesium, so ask your GP or kidney team before taking any magnesium supplement.
- Antibiotics: magnesium can stop some antibiotics, such as doxycycline and ciprofloxacin, being absorbed properly. Ask your pharmacist how many hours apart to take them.
- Bisphosphonates and thyroid medicine: the same applies to alendronic acid and levothyroxine.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: ask your GP, midwife or pharmacist before taking any supplement.
- Children: ask a GP or pharmacist before giving any supplement to a child; adult doses aren’t suitable.
Too much magnesium from supplements can cause diarrhoea; see magnesium side effects. If you’re over 60 or take several medicines, magnesium for older adults goes further.
When should you take magnesium glycinate?
You can take magnesium glycinate at any time of day, with or without food, as long as you take it consistently. Many people take it in the evening as part of a wind-down routine. If it upsets your stomach, split the dose or take it with a meal. If you take any of the medicines above, ask your pharmacist how far apart to take them.

Our pick: Evopure Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex
This is our own product, so we’re not neutral. The Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex is a berry drink powder rather than a capsule:
- Per 4.75g serving (one scoop): 290mg of magnesium (77% NRV) from 1,000mg of magnesium bisglycinate and 900mg of magnesium citrate.
- Also per serving: 500mg of glycine, 100mg of L-theanine, oat straw extract (300mg), and hops, chamomile and passionflower extracts (200mg each), with natural berry flavour and stevia.
- How to take it: stir one scoop into water, a warm drink or a smoothie, about 30 minutes before bed. New to magnesium? Start with a third of a scoop. Around 30 servings a pouch.
It’s vegan and made in the UK. It isn’t a pure glycinate: it pairs bisglycinate with citrate. If you want glycinate only, in a capsule, the table above shows options. Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function and to the normal functioning of the nervous system.
