For most UK adults, the best vitamin D supplement is a simple vitamin D3 product giving 10 micrograms (400 IU) a day, taken daily from October to March as the NHS advises. Tablets, softgels, sprays, drops and gummies all work. Choose one you will remember, read the dose on the label and stay under 100 micrograms a day.
If you already take CBD, Evopure’s Mint CBD Oil + Vit D3 gives 10 micrograms of vegan vitamin D3 in each half pipette, so one product covers both. Below: how much you need, D3 vs D2, forms, six UK options compared and advice for women. Checked November 2026.
How much vitamin D should I take a day in the UK?
The NHS says adults and children from 1 year old need 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day. Between October and early March the UK sun is too weak for your skin to make enough, so everyone should consider a daily 10 microgram supplement in autumn and winter.
Some people should take 10 micrograms all year round:
- people who are not often outdoors, such as those who are housebound or live in a care home
- people who usually cover most of their skin when outside
- people with dark skin, who should consider it
The upper limit for adults is 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) a day. More than that over a long time can raise calcium in the blood. Our guide to too much vitamin D covers the warning signs, and vitamin D in winter explains the October to March advice in more detail.
Labels mix units. 1 microgram equals 40 IU, so 10 micrograms is 400 IU, 25 micrograms is 1,000 IU and 100 micrograms is 4,000 IU.
Vitamin D3 or D2: which is best?
Both count towards the 10 micrograms. Most UK supplements use D3 (cholecalciferol), the form your skin makes in sunlight. A 2012 meta-analysis found D3 raised blood levels more than D2 when given in larger, less frequent doses; with daily doses the difference was smaller.
D3 usually comes from lanolin in sheep’s wool, so it is not automatically vegan. Vegan D3 is made from lichen or algae, and D2 is plant-based. Look for “vegan” on the label, not just “vegetarian”. More in vitamin D vs D3, including whether you need K2.
Which form of vitamin D is best: tablets, sprays, drops or gummies?
The form matters less than taking it every day, ideally with a meal (see the best time to take vitamin D).
| Form | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Tablets | Low cost, easy to count | Some people dislike swallowing them |
| Softgels and capsules | D3 already in oil | Gelatine shells are not vegan |
| Oral sprays | No swallowing | Check how many sprays make the dose |
| Drops and oils | Flexible dose, mixes into routines | Measure carefully |
| Gummies | Taste, easy to remember | Sugar, and easy to take too many |
Vitamin D supplement s in the UK compared
Facts below come from each brand’s own website, checked November 2026. Evopure isn’t connected with these brands, and we don’t rate them: this is what each label says.

|---|---|---|---|
| Healthspan Super Strength Vitamin D3 | 25µg (1,000 IU) | Tablet | Vegetarians |
| BetterYou Vitamin D1000 Oral Spray | 25µg (1,000 IU), 1 spray | Spray | Vegetarians (lanolin D3) |
| Holland and Barrett Vegan Vitamin D 1000 I.U. | 25µg | Capsule | Vegans |

| Evopure (Evolabs) Mint CBD Oil + Vit D3 | 10µg (400 IU) per half pipette, plus CBD | Oil drops | Vegans, adults 18+ |
The 25 microgram products give 2.5 times the NHS daily amount, well under the 100 microgram limit. For exactly 10 micrograms, try Holland and Barrett Vitamin D 400 I.U. 10ug tablets, Boots everyday Vitamin D 10µg tablets or Healthspan Vitamin D3 10µg.
What does Healthspan’s vitamin D range include?
Healthspan’s own site lists Vitamin D3 10µg tablets, Super Strength Vitamin D3 (25µg), Vitamin D3 50 Plus (50µg) and a Vegan Friendly version made with algae-based D3, plus D3 and K2, Calcium and Vitamin D, and Elite 4,000 IU capsules and spray. 4,000 IU is 100 micrograms, the full NHS adult limit, so take it only on medical advice.
What is the best vitamin D supplement for women?
Women need the same as men: 10 micrograms a day, with the same 100 microgram limit, so a plain D3 supplement is enough for most. A few times of life change what to look for.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
The NHS advises 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day in pregnancy between early October and late March, and no more than 100 micrograms a day. Avoid supplements containing vitamin A (retinol) and cod liver oil while pregnant. Healthy Start vitamins for pregnant and breastfeeding women contain folic acid, vitamin C and vitamin D, and are free for people on the Healthy Start scheme until the baby’s first birthday. Ask your midwife or health visitor.
We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so the Mint CBD Oil + Vit D3 is not an option here.
Menopause and bones
The menopause raises the chance of osteoporosis. NHS advice for bone health is a vitamin D supplement in winter, plenty of calcium-rich food (adults need 700mg of calcium a day) and HRT if you are offered it for menopause symptoms. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. Take calcium supplements only if your doctor suggests them; see calcium supplements and supplements for menopause.
Women over 50, 60 and 70
The amount stays at 10 micrograms; if you rarely get outdoors, take it all year. Multivitamins often contain vitamin D, so add up every product (more in supplements for women over 40 and multivitamins).
Evopure’s vitamin D3 option: Mint CBD Oil + Vit D3
If you just want vitamin D, a plain D3 tablet is the simplest, cheapest choice for most people. Our Mint CBD Oil + Vit D3 suits adults who already take CBD and would like their winter vitamin D in the same drops.
- 10µg vegan vitamin D3 (algae-based) per half pipette, 200% NRV: the NHS daily amount in one serving. 850µg per bottle.
- CBD per half pipette (0.35ml): 11.7mg, from a 1,000mg 30ml bottle (the one strength the Mint comes in), in MCT oil with natural mint flavouring.
- Made in the UK from US-grown hemp, on the FSA public list linked to validated applications, with CBD batch reports on our lab testing page.
Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
The FSA advises healthy adults to take no more than 10mg of CBD a day. This is precautionary advice, not a legal limit. A full half pipette (0.35ml) gives 11.7mg of CBD with the full 10µg of D3; if you want to stay within the FSA figure, about 0.3ml gives 10mg of CBD and about 8.5µg of D3.
The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.

For adults 18+; not for pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you take any regular medicines, check with your GP or pharmacist first. You don’t need a separate vitamin D tablet as well.

The Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex is a reishi hot chocolate that contains a little natural caffeine. Both are vegan and made in the UK. More on choosing CBD in the best CBD oil UK guide.
Who should check with a GP or pharmacist first
The NHS says some people cannot safely take as much vitamin D. Talk to your GP or pharmacist before taking it if you have kidney problems or have had kidney stones, high calcium in your blood or urine, sarcoidosis, or high vitamin D levels, or if you already take a prescribed dose. If you think you may be low, vitamin D deficiency symptoms explains the signs and when a blood test helps. For babies and children, follow the NHS amounts and ask a GP or pharmacist; our products are for adults only.
