How many sprays of BetterYou magnesium, and how to use it

BetterYou’s directions, per product page:

  • Oil and Sensitive sprays: 5 to 10 sprays on clean skin, massaged in, ideally after a shower or before bed. BetterYou suggests starting with one or two sprays and building up.
  • Sleep Body Spray: 5 to 10 sprays every evening, at least half an hour before bed.
  • Lotions and gel: 4 pumps of lotion, or a pea-sized amount of gel on the area you want, massaged in.
  • Flakes: 250g in a bath, or 150g in about 5 litres of water as a foot soak, for 20 minutes, 2 to 3 times a week.

Every skin product says external use only, avoid the eyes and don’t use on broken skin.

Flakes are magnesium chloride, a different salt from Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate). See magnesium flakes and Epsom salt baths.

Does BetterYou magnesium spray absorb through the skin?

Some magnesium may get through the skin, but there’s no strong evidence that sprays raise magnesium levels the way swallowed magnesium does. BetterYou says its range is “absorption tested by Cardiff University” and lists these studies:

  • Cardiff University, 2011: a lab (in vitro) test, which BetterYou says found magnesium passed through, best when massaged in.
  • Watkins and Josling, 2010: a pilot study in 9 people, not listed on PubMed.
  • St Mark’s Hospital, 2024: 6 patients with an ileostomy and low blood magnesium used the spray for 6 weeks. Two had a rise in blood magnesium. The paper says BetterYou paid for the investigations and supplied the spray.

Independent research is more cautious:

  • A 2017 review in Nutrients concluded that promoting magnesium through the skin is scientifically unsupported.
  • A 2017 pilot study of a magnesium cream in 25 people found a small rise in blood magnesium that was only statistically significant in a subgroup.
  • A 2016 lab study found magnesium can pass through human skin, mainly via hair follicles, but didn’t measure blood levels.

In short: small studies, mostly run with or paid for by the brand, and no large trials. Many people enjoy a spray as a bedtime ritual, but food and oral supplements are the proven way to top up. See signs of magnesium deficiency and how much magnesium per day.

If you’d rather drink your magnesium

If you’d like magnesium you swallow, or a warm evening routine, here’s what we make. They’re different products, not like-for-like swaps.

  • Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex: a berry-flavoured drink powder with magnesium bisglycinate and citrate (148mg of magnesium per serving), glycine, L-theanine, chamomile, passionflower, hops and oat straw. Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex: a reishi hot chocolate with reishi mushroom extract, organic cacao, maca, coconut milk powder and coconut sugar. It contains a little natural caffeine from the cacao. See reishi cacao.
  • Sleep CBD Oil: broad spectrum CBD with 0% THC, passion flower and a terpene blend led by myrcene. See how much CBD to take.

The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.

All three are vegan, made in the UK and third-party lab tested, and for adults (18+) only. We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

BetterYou sleep, joint and muscle versions

Sleep products. The Sleep Body Spray (75mg per 10 sprays), Sleep Lotion, Sleep Bath Flakes and Magnesium Max Sleep Powder are BetterYou’s bedtime range. The powder is a cocoa drink with passionflower. No health claim linking magnesium to sleep is authorised in the UK. We found no trials of sprays for sleep, and a 2021 review of oral magnesium found only three small, low-quality trials. More in magnesium for sleep and does magnesium make you sleepy?

Joint and Muscle sprays. The Joint spray adds 50mg of glucosamine per 10 sprays, with menthol and eucalyptus for a cooling feel. The Muscle spray adds arnica and capsicum for a warm feel. We found no published trials of either for joints, muscles or restless legs. See glucosamine, magnesium for cramps and magnesium and restless legs. Ongoing pain is worth a GP visit.

The tingle, side effects and who should check first

  • Tingling or itching: BetterYou calls this “the magnesium tingle” and says it shows low magnesium and passes with use. A simpler explanation is that the solution is very salty. Start with one or two sprays, try the Sensitive spray or a lotion, and stop if irritation occurs.
  • Drinks and powders: Magnesium Max gives 375mg per serving. The NHS says 400mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm, and that more for a short time can cause diarrhoea. BetterYou says Magnesium Water can have a laxative effect if you have too much.
  • Kidney disease or medicines: BetterYou advises checking with your GP first. With kidney disease your body may not clear magnesium well.
  • Children: BetterYou lists the Oil spray for all ages at half the adult amount, the Sleep spray from 13, and a kids’ sleep spray from age 1. Ask your GP or health visitor first, and see magnesium for kids.
  • Pregnancy: BetterYou says its skin products are considered safe in pregnancy but to check with your GP or midwife, and that the Max Sleep Powder isn’t recommended in pregnancy. See magnesium in pregnancy.
