There is no proven best time to take CBD oil, so match it to your routine: with breakfast, or about an hour before bed as part of a wind-down. Take it at the same time each day, ideally with a meal, because studies find a fatty meal raises the amount of CBD you absorb roughly four to ten times.
Best time to take CBD oil: which Evopure product fits your routine?
Choose by the time you’ll actually take it. Checked against our product pages in October 2026:
If you’re choosing an oil for aches and stiffness, our guide to CBD oil for pain relief in the UK covers what the evidence shows and which strengths people start with.
| Product | Fits | Drops for 10mg | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flow CBD Oil with Ashwagandha and Maca | Morning, with breakfast | 4 (500mg) or 2 (1,000mg) | Ashwagandha, maca and a citrus terpene blend |
| Sleep CBD Oil with Passion Flower | Evening, about an hour before bed | 4 (500mg) or 2 (1,000mg) | Passion flower and our Relax terpene blend, with an earthy, herbal taste |
| Broad Spectrum CBD Oil | Any time of day | 4, 2 or 1 (500mg, 1,000mg or 2,000mg) | Just CBD and organic MCT oil, unflavoured |
| Broad Spectrum CBD Capsules | Any time, no taste | One 10mg capsule | 10mg or 25mg, 30 a pack. Vegan HPMC capsule with inulin |
Flow contains ashwagandha, so it isn’t for you if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18 or have a thyroid, liver or autoimmune condition. Check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take regular medication, and don’t add another ashwagandha supplement. See when to take ashwagandha.
The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.
How to compare value: divide the price by the total mg of CBD to get the price per mg. Stronger bottles cost less per mg, so the 2,000mg Broad Spectrum CBD Oil works out cheapest, and capsules cost more because the dose is ready-measured. Subscribe and Save lowers the price of every order, and you can skip, pause or cancel any time.

View productIs there a best time to take CBD oil?
Not one that suits everyone. Two things matter more than the clock: taking it with food, which changes how much you absorb, and taking it at a similar time each day.
| When | Why people choose it | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Morning, with breakfast | Easy to remember alongside a morning routine | A breakfast with some fat in it helps absorption |
| Evening, with dinner | Fits a wind-down routine; dinner is often the biggest meal | Drowsiness is a common side effect, so some people prefer evenings |
| Split, morning and evening | Spreads the daily amount across the day | It is the daily total that counts |
Morning or night: which is better?
Neither is better in itself: research compares fed and fasted states, not mornings and evenings. Choose the slot that fits your day.
Taking CBD oil in the morning
Morning works well if you eat breakfast at a regular time, because you can pair your drops with it and rarely forget. If you find it makes you drowsy, move it to the evening, and don’t drive until you know how it affects you. Our guide to how to take CBD oil walks through the steps.
Taking CBD oil in the evening
Evening suits people whose biggest meal is dinner, and people who notice CBD makes them a little drowsy. In clinical trials, sleepiness was one of the more common side effects, mostly at doses far above what food supplements contain. If you are reading up on CBD and sleep, our guide to CBD and sleep sets out what the studies do and don’t show.
How long before bed should you take CBD oil?
About an hour before bed is the usual advice, and it’s what the directions for our Sleep CBD Oil say. Blood-level studies add a twist: CBD from oil peaks around four hours after a dose, and a meal raises how much you absorb. So taking it with your evening meal is just as reasonable. Pick one and keep to the same time each night.
If you are not sure
Start in the evening for a week or two, then move it to the morning if that suits you better, and keep the same time for a couple of weeks before judging. Our CBD side effects guide explains what is normal.
How to split the FSA’s 10mg a day
The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to keep CBD from food to 10mg a day, which it puts at about 4 to 5 drops of a 5% oil. You can take that in one go or split it between morning and evening. Splitting doesn’t change the daily total, so add up every CBD product you use that day.
| Evopure oil strength (10ml) | CBD per drop (about) | 10mg a day in one go | 10mg a day, split |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500mg (5%) | 2.5mg | 4 drops | 2 drops morning, 2 drops evening |
| 1,000mg (10%) | 5mg | 2 drops | 1 drop morning, 1 drop evening |
| 2,000mg (20%) | 10mg | 1 drop | Not practical to split; a lower strength is easier |
| 10mg capsule | 10mg per capsule | 1 capsule | Not split; take it with a meal |
Drop sizes vary a little, so treat these as close guides. Our CBD oil strengths guide explains mg and percentages, and the CBD dosage guide has a full drops chart for every Evopure oil.
Using Flow in the morning and Sleep at night? The 10mg is shared: 2 drops of each 500mg oil. For what the advice means in practice, see our guide to the CBD daily limit in the UK.
Should you take CBD oil with food?
Yes, if you can. CBD dissolves in fat, and on an empty stomach the body absorbs very little of it. A 2020 review estimated that only about 6% of an oral dose reaches the bloodstream when fasting, rising about fourfold with a high-fat meal. Controlled studies in healthy adults point the same way:
| Study | What was tested | Total CBD exposure vs empty stomach |
|---|---|---|
| Taylor et al, 2018 | 1,500mg pharmaceutical CBD, high-fat meal | About 4.2 times higher |
| Crockett et al, 2020 | 750mg pharmaceutical CBD, high-fat meal | 3.8 times higher |
| Crockett et al, 2020 | Same dose, low-fat meal | 2.7 times higher |
| Crockett et al, 2020 | Same dose, with whole milk | 2.4 times higher |
| Saals et al, 2025 | 70mg CBD from a hemp extract, high-fat meal | About 9.7 times higher (peak levels about 17 times higher) |
Two caveats. These studies used single doses, mostly far larger than a food supplement, and more CBD in the blood is a measure of absorption, not of how you will feel. What they do show clearly is that food is the biggest single factor you control. Our guide to CBD bioavailability goes deeper.
What counts as “with food”?
You don’t need a fry-up. Even the low-fat meal and the glass of whole milk in the Crockett study raised absorption. Taking your drops with or just after a normal meal, such as eggs on toast, porridge made with milk, or dinner, is enough.
Can you take CBD oil on an empty stomach?
You can, but you will absorb less, and the amount can vary more from day to day. If you prefer an empty stomach, keep doing it the same way each time so the effect stays predictable. If you switch from fasting to taking it with meals, expect it to feel a bit stronger, and adjust slowly.
Why the carrier oil matters
We use MCT (coconut) oil as the carrier because it is light and almost flavourless. Our guide to MCT vs hemp seed vs olive oil compares them.
Under the tongue, then swallow: does holding it matter?
The usual instruction is to place the drops under your tongue, hold them for about 60 seconds, then swallow. It is a tidy habit and it gets the oil past your taste buds quickly, but the evidence suggests most of the CBD is absorbed after you swallow, not through the lining of your mouth.
A 2024 Loughborough University study gave healthy men the same CBD oil either as drops under the tongue or inside capsules. Blood levels were not different between the two: CBD peaked at around four hours either way, and the researchers concluded the drops were most likely swallowed before much could be absorbed under the tongue.
So hold the drops if you like, but don’t worry if you swallow sooner. Taking them with a meal will make a bigger difference. See how to take CBD oil step by step.
Capsules vs oil: does the timing change?
Less than many guides suggest. Because drops are mostly swallowed, oil and capsules seem to reach the blood at a similar pace, with peak levels a few hours after a dose in trials. The bigger differences are practical.
| Format | When to take it | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Oil drops | With a meal, at a set time each day | Easy to adjust a drop at a time, and easy to split |
| Capsules | With a meal, at a set time each day | A fixed amount per capsule, no taste, easy to carry |
| Balm | Whenever you want to use it | Applied to the skin, not swallowed, so food timing doesn’t apply |
Our guides to CBD oil vs capsules and the best CBD capsules in the UK compare them, and our CBD balm guide covers how a balm fits alongside an oil.
How often should you take CBD oil?
Most people take CBD oil once or twice a day, every day. In a trial of twice-daily dosing in healthy adults, CBD reached a steady level in the body after about two days, with an effective half-life of roughly 10 to 17 hours. That trial used very high doses, so treat the numbers as a guide to the pattern rather than exact figures for drops.
In practice:
- Once a day is simplest and works well with a fixed mealtime.
- Twice a day spreads the same daily total, for example half with breakfast and half with dinner.
- Every day matters more than the exact hour. Missing the odd day is fine; just carry on at your usual time and don’t double up.
How long does one dose last?
CBD peaks about four hours after a dose, then falls over the rest of the day, while a small amount lingers far longer. Daily doses top up what’s left, so taking it every day matters more than the exact hour. Our guide to how long CBD takes to work covers onset and duration by format, and how long CBD stays in your system explains half-life and drug tests.
Timing with coffee, alcohol and medicines
Coffee
Drops with your morning coffee are fine. A milky coffee works better, as the oil floats on black. Research hasn’t shown that CBD cancels out caffeine: see CBD and coffee.
Medicines
Searches like “can I take CBD with amlodipine, citalopram or atorvastatin” are common. Taking CBD at a different time of day does not remove the risk of an interaction. CBD is broken down by liver enzymes, mainly CYP2C19 and CYP3A4, and it can change levels of some medicines. It stays in the body for many hours, so spacing doses a few hours apart doesn’t separate them.
Some medicine leaflets tell you to avoid grapefruit, because it blocks an enzyme called CYP3A4. In a study in people, CBD did not meaningfully affect CYP3A4, so a grapefruit warning doesn’t by itself mean CBD will interact. It is still a useful prompt to ask your pharmacist, and no warning doesn’t mean it’s safe to combine. The FSA does not recommend CBD for anyone taking medication unless under medical direction, so check with your GP or pharmacist first. Our guide to CBD and medication lists the medicine types to check.
Alcohol
In the Crockett trial, taking CBD with alcohol raised CBD levels by about 1.6 times compared with an empty stomach. Both CBD and alcohol can make you drowsy, so go easy if you combine them, and don’t drive if you feel sleepy. See CBD and alcohol for more.
Who shouldn’t take CBD
iOur products are for adults (18+) only. We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The FSA also advises against CBD for people trying to conceive. If you have a health condition, speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting.
