Most CBD oil tastes earthy, grassy and slightly bitter, a bit like strong green tea or fresh-cut herbs, with an oily feel. Natural broad and full spectrum oils taste stronger because they keep more of the hemp plant’s compounds. If you don’t like it, choose a flavoured oil, switch to capsules, or mix it into food or a drink.
Below: why CBD oil tastes the way it does, how different types compare, seven ways to make it taste better, and whether taste tells you anything about quality.
Why CBD oil tastes the way it does
| Ingredient | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Hemp terpenes | Earthy, piney, peppery or citrus notes. See what are terpenes? |
| Plant compounds such as flavonoids and chlorophyll | Grassy, bitter, “green” flavours; more in less refined oils |
| Carrier oil | MCT (coconut) oil is mild and neutral; hemp seed oil is nutty; olive oil is peppery |
| Added flavours or botanicals | Fruit, mint or herbal notes that mask the hemp taste |
Taste by type of CBD
| Type | Typical taste |
|---|---|
| Full spectrum | Strongest, earthiest hemp flavour |
| Broad spectrum (unflavoured) | Earthy and slightly bitter, often a little milder |
| Isolate | Almost tasteless; mainly the carrier oil |
| Flavoured oils | Mostly the flavour, with a mild hemp finish |
| Capsules | No taste |
7 ways to make CBD oil taste better
- Choose a flavoured oil. Our Evolabs oils come in cherry, orange and mint, all broad spectrum.
- Switch to capsules if you dislike any taste. See CBD oil vs capsules.
- Hold it under your tongue briefly, then follow with a drink. Many people hold it for 30 to 60 seconds, then sip water or juice.
- Mix it into food or drink. Smoothies, yoghurt, porridge, salad dressing or a latte all mask the taste. Taking CBD with food, especially fatty food, also increases how much is absorbed.
- Take it before brushing your teeth, not straight after: mint toothpaste can make it taste more bitter.
- Chill the bottle. Cold dulls flavour slightly; just check the label’s storage advice.
- Follow with something strong-tasting, such as a square of dark chocolate or a citrus slice.

Does taste tell you about quality?
Not reliably. A strong earthy taste can mean a less refined, more natural extract; a bland taste can mean isolate or a heavily refined oil. Neither tells you how much CBD is in the bottle or whether it contains THC. A rancid, sour or “off” smell, though, can mean the oil has gone off, so check the best-before date and storage. The batch lab report is the only real measure of quality. See how to read a lab report.
FAQs
What does CBD oil taste like?
Earthy, grassy and slightly bitter, a bit like strong green tea, with an oily feel. Flavoured oils taste mostly of the added flavour.
Why does CBD oil taste so bad?
The bitter, grassy taste comes from hemp compounds such as terpenes, flavonoids and chlorophyll. More natural oils taste stronger.
Is it OK to put CBD oil in a drink?
Yes. Mix it into something with a little fat, like milk or a smoothie, as CBD doesn’t dissolve in water.
Does flavoured CBD oil work as well?
Yes, if it contains the same amount of CBD. Check the mg on the label and the lab report.
Does CBD oil go off?
It can. A rancid or sour smell suggests it has. Store it somewhere cool and dark with the lid on, and use it by the best-before date.
Do CBD capsules have a taste?
No. Capsules are swallowed whole, so they’re the best option if you dislike the taste of oil.
