Dairy-Free Hot Chocolate: What to Check, the Best Plant Milk and Is Costa’s Vegan? (UK)

Last updated: October 2026

Dairy-free hot chocolate is plain cocoa or cacao, sugar and a plant milk such as oat or soya, with no milk powder, whey or milk chocolate in the mix. Cocoa itself is dairy-free; the dairy usually hides in instant powders. When we checked in October 2026, several big-name hot chocolates contained milk or carried “may contain milk” warnings.

Our own Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex is a vegan hot chocolate powder made with organic cacao, reishi mushroom extract, maca, coconut milk powder and organic coconut sugar. The coconut milk powder makes it creamy without dairy, so it only needs warm plant milk or water. It contains a little natural caffeine from the cacao.

What makes hot chocolate dairy-free?

Cocoa and cacao powder come from cocoa beans, so on their own they contain no milk. Dairy gets in three ways:

  • The powder. Instant “just add water” mixes often use skimmed milk powder, whey or milk chocolate pieces for creaminess.
  • The milk. Cafés and recipes default to cow’s milk unless you ask for a plant milk.
  • The toppings. Whipped cream and chocolate flakes often contain milk, and most marshmallows contain gelatine, which isn’t vegan.

Lactose-free is not dairy-free. The NHS explains that lactose-free dairy has an added enzyme, lactase, to help digest the lactose, which suits lactose intolerance. It is still cow’s milk, with the milk protein behind cow’s milk allergy.

Dairy-free hot chocolate powder: what to check on the label

  • Milk words. Milk powder, whey, milk solids, lactose, casein or caseinate, cream, butterfat and milk chocolate. UK labels must highlight allergens such as milk in the ingredients, often in bold or capitals. Check flavourings too: one instant mix we read lists “flavourings (contain MILK)”.
  • “May contain milk”. A precautionary warning about cross-contamination. It matters most if you have a milk allergy.
  • Vegan is not free-from. The FSA says “vegan” isn’t defined in food law and people with a milk allergy should never assume a vegan product is safe. A “free-from milk” label is a guarantee that milk is absent.
  • Sugar and sweeteners. Sugar is often the first ingredient in drinking chocolate; “light” versions tend to use sweeteners such as sucralose.
  • Milk or water? A powder made for water usually contains milk powder or coconut milk powder. A plain drinking chocolate leaves the milk to you.

Is Costa, Starbucks or Cadbury hot chocolate vegan?

Facts from each brand’s own website, checked October 2026. Recipes change, so check before ordering. Evopure isn’t connected with these brands.

Hot chocolate Milk in the standard recipe? With a plant milk Allergen note
Costa Hot Chocolate Yes, semi-skimmed milk Oat, soya or coconut; milk then shows as a cross-contamination risk only Labelled vegetarian, not vegan
Starbucks Classic Hot Chocolate Yes, milk plus whipped cream Oat, soya, almond or coconut; the mocha sauce lists no milk Whipped cream contains milk
Cadbury Drinking Chocolate No milk ingredient You add your own milk “May contain milk”
Cadbury Instant Hot Chocolate Yes, whey and skimmed milk powder Not dairy-free Contains milk

Costa. Its menu page labels the Hot Chocolate “Vegetarian”. With oat milk, the allergen data marks milk “C”: not an ingredient, but a cross-contamination risk. Costa uses separate jugs but shared steam arms, so it says steamed milk drinks may not suit severe allergies. Its oat milk may contain gluten and its coconut drink contains soya.

Starbucks. Its UK autumn 2026 allergen guide lists the Classic Hot Chocolate as milk, mocha sauce (water, sugar, cocoa powder, fat-reduced cocoa powder, vanilla extract), reduced fat whipped cream and mocha drizzle. Ask for a plant milk and no cream. Starbucks says it can’t guarantee drinks are free from any allergen.

Cadbury. Drinking Chocolate lists sugar, cocoa powder, an acidity regulator and flavouring, with “may contain milk”. Instant Hot Chocolate and Highlights both contain whey powder and skimmed milk powder.

Best plant milk for hot chocolate

Oat and soya are the best all-rounders. Protein helps body and foam, and a 2025 University of Hertfordshire study of 191 plant drinks from the 10 biggest UK supermarkets shows how much they vary.

Plant milk In hot chocolate Protein per 100ml (UK median) Watch for
Oat Creamy, slightly sweet; barista versions froth best 0.8g Gluten, if you need to avoid it
Soya Rich and full-bodied 3.25g Soya allergy
Coconut Light, mild coconut taste; good with orange or spice 0.5g Some blends contain soya
Almond Thinner and nutty; add extra cocoa 0.6g Tree nut allergy

Cow’s milk had a median of 3.5g, so soya is the only close match. If plant milk replaces dairy, the NHS suggests unsweetened, calcium-fortified versions. In the study, 87% of non-organic plant drinks had added calcium but only 34% had added iodine, so check the carton. Our guides to calcium, vitamin B12 and daily protein help fill gaps. The NHS also says babies under 1 shouldn’t have rice, oat or almond drinks in place of milk.

Easy dairy-free hot chocolate recipe

  1. In a mug, mix 2 heaped teaspoons (about 10g) of cocoa or cacao powder, 1 to 2 teaspoons of sugar or maple syrup and a pinch of salt.
  2. Stir in a splash of warm oat or soya milk to make a smooth paste.
  3. Heat 250ml of the milk until steaming, not boiling, and whisk it in. Add a drop of vanilla if you like.
  4. For a richer mug, melt in 2 squares of dark chocolate. Check the label: many dark chocolates contain milk or say “may contain milk”.

That mug has roughly 23mg of caffeine (our estimate from USDA cocoa data), against about 75mg in a cup of tea (NHS). See how long caffeine lasts if you’re sensitive.

Cocoa or cacao? Both are dairy-free. Cacao is less processed; cocoa is roasted and often alkalised (the “acidity regulator” on some labels) for a smoother taste. Our hot chocolate recipes compare them, with 11 twists, and ceremonial cacao and dark chocolate go further.

Prefer a ready-made mix? Stir 1 to 2 teaspoons (4 to 8g) of Reishi Cacao into warm plant milk and taste before sweetening. For other brands’ mushroom mixes, see the best mushroom hot chocolate UK guide, or bake it into a vegan pumpkin chocolate cake.

Which Evopure product fits your evening?

Both are vegan drink powders made in the UK, checked against our product pages in October 2026.

They’re food supplements, not medicines. Choose the Reishi Cacao for a dairy-free hot chocolate, or the Magnesium Sleep Complex to skip caffeine late at night. The Reishi Cacao also makes an alcohol-free nightcap or a hot chocolate gift.

Who should be careful: We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding. They’re for adults (18+) only. The MSD Manual says reishi might slow blood clotting and lower blood pressure, so if you take blood thinners, blood pressure medicines or any other medication, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
