Last updated: October 2026
Twinings Sleep tea is a caffeine-free herbal infusion. When we checked Twinings’ UK website in October 2026, Superblends Sleep listed passionflower (35%), apple, camomile (14%), cinnamon, cardamom and cloves, with no valerian or melatonin. Two sister blends, Sleep Valerian and Orange Blossom and Sweet Dreams, add valerian root at 4% and 6%.
Facts below come from Twinings’ own UK pages. This isn’t a review, and Evopure isn’t connected with Twinings. To compare it with other blends, see our best tea for sleep guide.
What’s in Twinings Sleep tea?
Twinings sells three teas in its UK Sleep range. Each box lists a net weight, so we worked out the herbs per bag:
Some people pair a bedtime tea with a few drops of CBD oil; our guide to the best CBD oil for sleep in the UK compares strengths, timing and the FSA’s 10mg a day advice.
| Tea (UK, Oct 2026) | Main herbs listed | Valerian per bag |
|---|---|---|
| Superblends Sleep (spiced apple and vanilla) | Passionflower 35%, apple 15%, camomile 14%, cinnamon 10% | None |
| Sleep Valerian and Orange Blossom | Camomile 35%, passionflower 35%, lavender 12%, orange blossom 10% | 4%, about 60mg |
| Sweet Dreams (raspberry) | Passionflower 53%, apple, limeflower, added niacin | 6%, about 120mg |
Sleep and Sleep Valerian bags weigh about 1.5g (30g per 20), so a cup of Superblends Sleep holds roughly 525mg of passionflower and 210mg of camomile. Sweet Dreams bags weigh about 2g. All three are labelled vegan, sugar free and naturally caffeine free, at 1 to 3 kcal a cup. Twinings says its teas contain none of the 14 declarable allergens.
Twinings calm teas: Moment of Calm and Unwind
“Twinings calm tea” in the UK usually means Superblends Moment of Calm: camomile (44%), roasted chicory root (17%), apple, cinnamon, cardamom and added niacin (vitamin B3), 2.4mg per cup. Superblends Unwind is lemon balm (43%), camomile (18%), limeflower (13%), strawberry flavouring, liquorice root and added vitamin B12. Both are caffeine free. Nightly Calm is a different blend sold in the US.
The Wind Down Collection box holds four bags each of Sleep, Sleep Valerian, Sweet Dreams, Moment of Calm and Unwind.
Does Twinings Sleep tea contain melatonin?
Not in the UK. None of the UK blends list melatonin. Twinings sells a separate Sleep+ Melatonin tea in the US, as a supplement. In the UK, melatonin is a prescription-only medicine, so that tea isn’t sold here. See melatonin in the UK.
Does Twinings Sleep tea work?
No study has tested any Twinings tea. Research on the herbs is small and mixed:
| Ingredient | Amount stated | What the evidence says | Caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passionflower | 35% to 53% | One week-long trial of passionflower tea (41 adults) found slightly better self-rated sleep | Not for under-12s (EMA) |
| Camomile | 14% to 44% | A 2024 review of 10 studies found better sleep scores; results varied | Daisy family allergy |
| Valerian root | 4% to 6% | A 2006 review of 16 trials: might help, but most studies were weak | Pregnancy, driving |
| Lavender | 12% | One trial in 80 new mothers: less fatigue at 2 weeks, not at 4 | Little data |
| Lemon balm (Unwind) | 43% | Small trials, mostly extracts, show lower anxiety scores | Few tea studies |
A 2015 review of herbal medicines for insomnia found no clear difference from placebo. So a cup may help a little as part of a calm routine, and the warm-drink ritual itself may play a part. For each herb in more depth, see our herbal teas for sleep ranked by evidence, plus passion flower, chamomile tea, valerian root, lavender for sleep and lemon balm.
The NHS says to see a GP if poor sleep lasts months or affects daily life. See our insomnia guide.
If you want more than a tea: our options
Evopure doesn’t make a tea, but these suit an evening routine:
- Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex: a berry drink powder with magnesium bisglycinate and citrate (148mg magnesium per serving), glycine, L-theanine, hops, oat straw, and chamomile and passionflower extracts. Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. See magnesium for sleep.
- Sleep CBD Oil: broad spectrum CBD (0% THC) with passion flower and a terpene blend. CBD isn’t a treatment for sleep problems.
- Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex: a reishi hot chocolate. It contains a little natural caffeine from the cacao, so it suits earlier in the evening.
The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.
Our products are for adults (18+) only.
How long does it take to work, and when to drink it
Twinings says to infuse one bag in freshly boiled water for at least 3 minutes. There is no data on how fast the tea works. The EMA notes valerian medicines work better after 2 weeks of use. Many people drink a cup 30 to 60 minutes before bed, which leaves time for a last loo trip. Milk is fine if you like it.
Other bedtime drinks: Horlicks, lettuce water, the sleepy girl mocktail, magnesium drinks and Pukka Night Time tea.
Twinings Sleep tea side effects and who should check first
- Allergy: camomile is in the daisy family. Skip it if you react to daisies, ragweed or chrysanthemums.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: the NHS says no more than 4 cups of herbal tea a day in pregnancy, and to avoid teas with liquorice root (Unwind lists it). The EMA advises against valerian. Ask your midwife. We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Children: the EMA doesn’t recommend valerian or passionflower under 12.
- Medicines and alcohol: ask a pharmacist if you take sleeping tablets, anxiety medicine or anything that makes you drowsy. The EMA advises not driving after valerian, and it’s wise not to mix it with alcohol.
Most people notice nothing beyond a warm drink. If you feel groggy, have a stomach upset or a rash, stop. More: natural sleep aids ranked by evidence.
