Myprotein magnesium glycinate: the label maths

The “2398mg” in the 3-in-1 capsules’ name is the weight of the magnesium compounds, not the magnesium itself. The label breaks it down: 1,364mg of bisglycinate, 694mg of taurate and 340mg of malate give 250mg of magnesium, 67% of the nutrient reference value (NRV). Three capsules also add 5mg of vitamin B6 and 10µg of vitamin D3.

The sugar-free gummies work the same way: 721mg of magnesium bisglycinate gives 70mg of magnesium. Glycinate and bisglycinate mean the same here: magnesium bound to glycine. Holland and Barrett also names some products by compound weight; Solgar labels the magnesium itself.

The gummies page mentions sleep but uses only the authorised magnesium claims. Read more in magnesium glycinate, magnesium taurate and magnesium for sleep.

Where Evopure fits

Evopure isn’t connected with Myprotein. Our products are different, not like-for-like swaps:

  • Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex: a berry drink powder with magnesium bisglycinate and citrate (148mg of magnesium per serving), glycine, L-theanine, chamomile, passionflower, hops and oat straw. Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex: a reishi hot chocolate with organic cacao and maca. It contains a little natural caffeine.
  • Flow CBD Oil: broad spectrum CBD with 0% THC, ashwagandha and maca in MCT oil, in 500mg or 1,000mg.

The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.

All three are vegan and made in the UK, for adults (18+) only.

Citrate powder, gummies and oxide tablets

  • 100% Magnesium Citrate Powder: unflavoured, magnesium citrate only. A 2g serving gives 300mg of magnesium (80% NRV), once a day in water, juice or a shake.
  • Magnesium Gummies: raspberry gummies with 150mg of magnesium as citrate plus 0.7mg of vitamin B6. They contain sugar (sucrose, glucose syrup and caster sugar).
  • Glycinate gummies: sugar-free, sweetened with maltitol, erythritol and isomalt. The label warns that excessive consumption may produce laxative effects.
  • Essential Magnesium Tablets: magnesium oxide, 300mg from three tablets.

In a small 60-day UK trial (46 adults), citrate and an amino-acid chelate were absorbed better than oxide. See magnesium citrate.

Myprotein ZMA and Zinc & Magnesium

Both are one capsule a day with 150mg of magnesium (as citrate and oxide) and 10mg of zinc. ZMA adds 3.5mg of vitamin B6; Zinc & Magnesium adds 3.7mg of B6 and 0.2mg of copper. Both are labelled vegan and suggest an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before bed. ZMA’s label adds: avoid dairy or other calcium at the same time.

The ZMA page text mentions a two-capsule serving, but its nutrition table and directions are for one capsule, so follow the label on your pack. The NHS advises no more than 25mg of zinc a day from supplements unless a doctor advises it. See magnesium vs zinc and zinc.

Magnesium and training

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, to electrolyte balance and to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. No authorised claim covers strength, performance or recovery.

A 2006 review noted that strenuous exercise increases magnesium lost in sweat and urine, which may raise needs by 10 to 20%. See muscle recovery, magnesium for muscle pain, creatine, CBD for athletes and magnesium for athletes.

How much a day, and who should check first

The NHS says adults need 300mg (men) or 270mg (women) of magnesium a day, and that 400mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm. ZMA plus Calcium & Magnesium tablets would add 525mg, so add up every product you take. Vitamin B6 adds up too: the NHS advises no more than 10mg a day from supplements.

Myprotein’s glycinate labels say they’re not recommended for children or pregnant or breastfeeding women, and to consult your doctor if you take medication or have a medical condition. We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding. See how much magnesium per day and magnesium side effects, or our UK magnesium supplement guide for comparing products anywhere you shop.
