Yes, vaping can make you tired. Nicotine is a stimulant, so it gives a short lift that soon fades. The bigger cause is usually sleep: vaping in the evening, or waking in the night for a top-up, leaves you more tired the next day. Stopping can make you tired for a few weeks too.
About 5.5 million adults in Great Britain vape. The NHS says nicotine vaping is less harmful than smoking, but non-smokers and under-18s shouldn’t take it up. Checked November 2026.
Why vaping can make you tired
| Cause | What happens | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The lift wears off | Nicotine sharpens alertness briefly, then you dip and reach for more | Notice the pattern rather than chasing each dip |
| Vaping late | A stimulant near bedtime means lighter, broken sleep | Make your last vape earlier in the evening |
| Night-time top-ups | Cravings can wake you, and vaping keeps you up | Keep the vape out of the bedroom |
| Caffeine on top | Two stimulants stack up, especially later in the day | No coffee or tea after early afternoon |
| Dry mouth | The NHS lists dry mouth and throat as common side effects | Keep water to hand |
Does vaping make you tired or more awake?
Both. Nicotine raises alertness and focus, but briefly, so a day of frequent hits can feel like a string of small highs and dips. If you often feel tired but wired at night, late nicotine is worth a look, alongside caffeine (see does caffeine cause anxiety).
Why do I feel tired in the morning?
Usually because vaping near bedtime made your sleep lighter than you realised. See waking up tired for other causes.

View productWhat the research says about vaping and sleep
The evidence is limited and mostly from young US adults.
- Poorer sleep overall: a 2026 review of 12 studies found people who only vaped were 38% more likely to report poor sleep than never-vapers. Snapshot surveys like these can’t prove cause.
- Day by day: in a 30-day diary study, nicotine vaping days had higher odds of under 7 hours’ sleep.
- A loop: in a smartwatch study, more vaping meant poorer sleep, and more night waking meant more cravings the next day.
- Nicotine itself: a review of 52 studies in animals and people, mostly smokers, linked nicotine with taking longer to fall asleep, more broken sleep, less deep sleep and more daytime sleepiness.
Switched from smoking? Check your coffee
Chemicals in tobacco smoke, not nicotine, make the liver clear caffeine faster. When heavy smokers stopped, their caffeine clearance fell by about 36% within days. So after switching to a vape, your usual coffee lasts longer and can cost you sleep. Move your last cup earlier (see how long caffeine lasts).
Some medicines are affected too, so tell your GP or pharmacist when you stop smoking.
Tired after quitting vaping: how long does it last?
The NHS lists cravings, feeling irritable or low, trouble concentrating, feeling hungrier and difficulty sleeping as withdrawal symptoms. A major review found these typically peak in the first week and last 2 to 4 weeks.
The same review found fatigue itself isn’t a confirmed withdrawal symptom, so daytime tiredness is mostly the knock-on effect of poorer sleep.
- Get support: your local Stop Smoking Service is free. The NHS says cutting down gradually can make quitting easier.
- Protect your sleep: a regular bedtime and wind-down (see sleep hygiene).
- Get through the day: morning daylight, a short walk and a short power nap.
If you smoked before, don’t go back to cigarettes to feel less tired.
An evening routine without nicotine
No supplement is a stop smoking aid, and we don’t claim ours help you quit. Some adults simply like a cue that the day is done.
- Magnesium Glycinate Sleep Complex: an evening drink.
- Reishi Mushroom Adaptogenic Complex: a reishi hot chocolate. It contains a little natural caffeine, so have it earlier.
- Sleep CBD Oil: broad spectrum CBD with passion flower, as drops under the tongue. Don’t put CBD oil in a vape (here’s why).
The FSA’s 10mg a day figure is precautionary advice rather than a legal limit, set while longer-term safety research continues. At Evopure we think it is a very cautious figure, and many adults use more. If you go above it, increase slowly, and check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any medication.
iIf you take any regular medicines, check with your GP or pharmacist first. We don’t recommend our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding. For adults (18+) only.
When to see a GP
The NHS advises seeing a GP if:
- you’ve felt tired for a few weeks and aren’t sure why
- tiredness affects your daily life
- you’re tired with other symptoms, such as weight loss or mood changes
- you’ve been told you make gasping, snorting or choking noises while asleep (a sign of sleep apnoea)
