CBD for Nails: Does it Work or Is It a Trend?

Last updated: October 2026

There’s no research showing CBD strengthens nails or helps them grow. CBD nail serums and cuticle oils are a trend, and any benefit most likely comes from the carrier oils, which moisturise like any cuticle oil. For dry, brittle nails, the NHS recommends hand cream, gloves for wet work and regular trimming. See a GP about unexplained nail changes.

Below: what’s known about CBD and nails, what helps brittle nails, nail supplements, fungal nails, and when nail changes need checking.

Does CBD help nails?

No studies have tested CBD for nail strength, growth or appearance. The only nail-related CBD research is a small pilot study on pain in a rare genetic condition, not nail health. CBD nail products usually contain plant oils such as jojoba, almond or hemp seed oil, which moisturise the nail and cuticle. You’d get a similar effect from any good cuticle oil or hand cream.

If you like using a CBD skincare product, it’s unlikely to harm healthy nails. Patch test first, and stop if you get irritation. See CBD for skin.

What helps dry, brittle nails (NHS)

Do:

  • wear rubber gloves if your hands are often in water or cleaning products
  • apply hand cream to your nails and fingertips regularly
  • clean nails with a soft nailbrush
  • trim your nails regularly

Don’t:

  • cut nails down the edges; trim straight across the top
  • clean under nails with sharp objects
  • wear shoes that pinch your toes

Biting or picking nails and cuticles, lots of nail polish remover (especially acetone), and gel or acrylic nails can all weaken nails too.

Do nail supplements work?

Biotin is the most popular nail supplement, but reviews have found good evidence only in people who are actually deficient, which is rare. For most people, a varied diet with enough protein, iron and zinc matters more. Very brittle or spoon-shaped nails can be a sign of low iron, so speak to a GP rather than self-treating. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal nails. See magnesium vs zinc.

CBD and fungal nails

There’s no evidence CBD treats fungal nail infections. Thickened, discoloured or crumbly nails are often caused by a fungal infection, which usually needs an antifungal nail paint or tablets from a pharmacist or GP, and treatment can take months.

When to see a GP

See a GP if a nail has changed shape or colour or fallen off and you don’t know why, if the skin around your nails is sore, red, swollen and warm, or if a dark streak appears in a nail. Nail changes can sometimes be linked to conditions such as psoriasis, thyroid problems or low iron.

Questions, answered

There's no evidence it is. The carrier oils in CBD products can moisturise nails, just like any cuticle oil.

No study has shown CBD affects nail growth.

Regular hand cream on nails and fingertips, rubber gloves for wet work, trimming straight across, and less nail polish remover.

There's no evidence it can. A pharmacist can recommend antifungal treatments.

Only clearly in people who are deficient, which is rare. A varied diet matters more for most people.
