What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?
MS is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the myelin sheath — the protective coating around nerve fibres. This causes scarring (sclerosis) that disrupts signals travelling along the nerves, leading to a wide range of symptoms affecting vision, movement, sensation, balance and speech.
MS is typically diagnosed in the 20s and 30s and is a lifelong condition. It affects people in two main patterns: relapsing-remitting MS (symptoms come and go with gradual progression) and primary progressive MS (symptoms gradually worsen without periods of remission).

Treatments for MS
There is currently no cure for MS, but treatments can help manage symptoms:
- Steroids — to speed recovery following a relapse
- Disease-modifying medicines — to reduce the number of relapses and slow progression
- Symptom management — physiotherapy, fatigue management, pain relief, continence support
CBD is not a treatment for MS, but some people consider it as a supplementary wellness tool alongside clinician-guided care.
Is CBD oil a miracle cure for MS?
No — CBD cannot cure MS and should not replace prescribed treatment. Medical cannabis (containing THC alongside CBD) has shown some promise for certain MS symptoms — particularly Sativex, a licensed 1:1 CBD:THC spray. But medical cannabis and CBD supplements are not the same thing, and legal CBD oil in the UK is low in THC. Anyone selling CBD as a treatment for MS is breaking UK law and should not be trusted.

How might CBD oil support wellbeing for people with MS?
CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) — a network of receptors in the central and peripheral nervous systems that helps maintain homeostasis throughout the body. This is why CBD may have relevance for neurological conditions, though the science is still developing.
CBD may support people living with MS in several indirect ways:
- Pain and discomfort — CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties may help manage day-to-day pain alongside prescribed pain management
- Sleep quality — fatigue is a major MS symptom; CBD may support better sleep quality
- Stress and anxiety — living with a chronic condition significantly affects mental health; CBD may support mood balance
- Neuroprotection — early studies suggest CBD may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that could support nerve cell health, though human evidence in MS specifically remains limited

Much of the existing research involves cannabis (cannabinoids including THC) rather than CBD alone, which limits conclusions about CBD specifically. However:
- A meta-analysis concluded cannabinoids are “probably effective” at alleviating certain MS symptoms including pain and muscle spasticity
- A 2018 scientific review found CBD supplementation reduced pain, fatigue, inflammation, depression and spasticity in people with MS while improving mobility
- Animal model studies suggest CBD may reduce autoimmune responses and offer neuroprotective properties
These findings are promising but not definitive for CBD alone. More human clinical trials are needed before any clinical conclusions can be drawn.

CBD dosage for MS
There are no MS-specific CBD dosage guidelines. The UK FSA recommends healthy adults stay within 70 mg/day. Start low (10–20 mg/day) and increase slowly while tracking how you feel. Because CBD may interact with MS medications, discuss your starting dose with your neurologist or MS nurse before beginning.

Is CBD safe with MS medication?
CBD is generally well-tolerated, but it can interact with medications processed by CYP450 liver enzymes — including some disease-modifying drugs used in MS care. The grapefruit warning on your medication is the simplest practical indicator: if your MS medication advises against grapefruit, CBD is likely to interact similarly. Always consult your neurologist or MS nurse before starting CBD.

Frequently asked questions
Does CBD help with MS spasticity?
Early research and anecdotal reports suggest CBD may support comfort alongside other tools for managing spasticity. However, the stronger evidence involves full cannabis (with THC) rather than CBD alone. Discuss with your MS care team before trying.
Can CBD oil make MS worse?
No clinical evidence suggests CBD worsens MS. However, CBD can interact with MS medications, which could affect their efficacy. Always involve your medical team when considering CBD alongside existing treatment.
What is the difference between CBD oil and Sativex?
Sativex is a licensed medicine containing a 1:1 ratio of CBD and THC, prescribed for MS spasticity. It is fundamentally different from over-the-counter CBD supplements, which contain no or negligible THC and are not medicines.
Which CBD is best for people with MS?
Broad-spectrum CBD — retaining multiple cannabinoids and terpenes for the entourage effect, with 0% THC — is our recommendation. Choose organic, third-party tested products with published COAs.

The research on CBD and MS is still developing and currently limited. CBD is not a treatment or cure — but it may support sleep, stress and general wellbeing alongside prescribed medical care for some people with MS. If you choose to try CBD, work with your MS care team, choose quality-verified broad-spectrum products, start low and monitor your response carefully.
