Over 100 cannabinoids have been identified in cannabis and hemp plants — but most people only know CBD and THC. As interest in minor cannabinoids grows, CBDV (cannabidivarin) is attracting attention for its potential therapeutic applications. Here’s what we currently know.
Evopure broad-spectrum CBD — with minor cannabinoids
What is CBDV?
CBDV (cannabidivarin) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid first identified in 1969. It is structurally similar to CBD — a homolog with the same molecular composition but fewer carbon atoms in its side chain. CBDV is typically a minor component of the cannabinoid profile in most hemp strains, though some specific Cannabis indica landraces — particularly those from Asia and Africa — are naturally higher in CBDV and naturally low in THC.
Like CBD, CBDV is non-psychoactive — it will not cause a high.

What is CBDV used for?
CBDV is not currently isolated and sold as an individual cannabinoid supplement. However, it may be present in trace amounts in broad-spectrum CBD products — you can check the Certificate of Analysis (COA) for your product to see its full cannabinoid profile.
Research interest in CBDV has focused particularly on neurological and developmental conditions, where it has attracted attention from major pharmaceutical companies including GW Pharmaceuticals (the makers of Epidylex and Sativex).
Potential benefits of CBDV
Anticonvulsant properties
CBDV has attracted significant pharmaceutical interest for its anticonvulsant potential. GW Pharmaceuticals’ CBDV-based product GWP42006 showed early promise for focal seizures and autism spectrum disorders in preliminary trials. A 2012 rat study found CBDV had significant anticonvulsant effects without affecting motor function; a 2018 rodent study found it helped with neurobehavioural issues associated with Rett Syndrome.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
A 2019 study found CBDV may help reduce inflammation and restore lost muscle mass in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy — a condition causing chronic inflammation and skeletal muscle damage.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
CBDV is being studied as a potential support for some symptoms of ASD including repetitive behaviour, social functioning difficulties and cognitive challenges.
Anti-nausea
Rodent studies found CBDV may act as an agonist for CB1 receptors, which help block nausea responses.
Important note: all CBDV research cited here is from animal or early-stage human studies. No clinical conclusions can yet be drawn. CBDV is not a medicine.

CBDV is non-psychoactive — it will not cause a high. No adverse side effects have been reported in studies to date, and some researchers have suggested CBDV may be better tolerated than other cannabinoids. However, the full range of effects is still being studied through ongoing clinical trials.
Is CBDV legal in the UK?
Yes — CBDV is non-psychoactive and is not a controlled substance. This was confirmed by the Home Office in a Freedom of Information response. Only THC and its derivatives and analogues are considered controlled substances in the UK.
When choosing CBD products that may contain CBDV in trace amounts, always look for a published Certificate of Analysis (COA) from a reputable third-party laboratory to confirm the full cannabinoid profile and legal compliance.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between CBDV and CBD?
Both are non-psychoactive cannabinoids with similar molecular structures. CBDV has fewer carbon atoms in its side chain. Both interact with the endocannabinoid system but through somewhat different pathways. We know far more about CBD than CBDV at present.
Is CBDV good for anxiety?
A 2019 study on CBDV and ASD unexpectedly found it may influence GABA production, which could be relevant for anxiety. Research is still very early-stage and clinical conclusions cannot yet be made.
Can I buy CBDV as a standalone supplement?
Not currently as a widely available retail product. CBDV may appear in trace amounts in broad-spectrum CBD products — check the COA of your product to see the full cannabinoid profile.
Is CBDV safe?
No adverse effects have been reported in studies to date. However, research is still early-stage and the full safety profile is not yet established.
Final thoughts on CBDV
CBDV is a promising minor cannabinoid with genuine research interest, particularly in neurological and developmental applications. Clinical trials are ongoing and we’re likely to know more in coming years. For now, choosing quality broad-spectrum CBD means you benefit from the full range of naturally occurring minor cannabinoids — including whatever CBDV your hemp strain contains — alongside the entourage effect of terpenes and other cannabinoids.
