CBD vs CBN: What Are The Differences?

CBD vs CBN: What Are The Differences?

CBD and THC get the most attention in the cannabinoid world — but cannabis and hemp plants contain over 150 compounds. CBN (cannabinol) is one of the lesser-known ones generating growing research interest. Here’s how it compares to CBD.

What is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid found in cannabis and hemp. Legal in the UK when hemp-derived and within THC limits, CBD has become one of the most widely used wellness supplements in the country. It works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) to support homeostasis — balance — throughout the body.

Benefits of CBD

CBD is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant with a strong safety record confirmed by the World Health Organisation. Early research suggests it may support sleep, anxiety management, pain comfort and ECS balance. It’s available in oils, capsules, topicals, edibles and vapes — and is legal in many countries worldwide.

What is CBN?

CBN (cannabinol) was the first naturally occurring cannabinoid to be isolated in its pure form — back in 1896. Unlike CBD, CBN is not directly synthesised by the hemp plant but is instead the product of THC oxidation: when THC is exposed to heat and light over time, it degrades into CBN. This means CBN acts somewhat like a very mild, weakened form of THC — potentially mildly psychoactive at high concentrations, though far less potent than THC itself.

Effects and potential benefits of CBN

Research on CBN is limited, particularly in humans. Preclinical studies suggest:

  • Sedation and sleep — CBN is often marketed for sleep; studies suggest it may have sedative properties, particularly in combination with CBD
  • Antibacterial — laboratory studies found CBN effective against MRSA strains resistant to traditional antibiotics
  • Pain and fibromyalgia — a 2019 rat study found CBD and CBN together provided relief from chronic muscle pain disorders including fibromyalgia without side effects
  • Neuroprotective — one study found CBN may protect neurons by protecting mitochondria in brain cells

The entourage effect theory suggests CBN may be most beneficial when consumed alongside CBD rather than in isolation.

Key differences between CBD and CBN

  1. Legality — CBD is legal in the UK as a food supplement. CBN is not legal in the UK as it is structurally related to THC and falls under controlled substance regulations. You cannot legally buy CBN products in the UK.
  2. Research depth — CBD has extensive human and animal research; CBN research is largely preclinical and limited.
  3. Medical approval — a CBD-based product (Epidylex) has FDA approval for epilepsy. No CBN products have any clinical approval.
  4. Psychoactivity — CBD is fully non-psychoactive. CBN may have very mild psychoactive properties at high doses due to its THC origin.

Side effects of CBD vs CBN

CBD is very well-tolerated. Possible side effects at higher doses include dry mouth, nausea and fatigue. CBN has two notable risks:

  • Drowsiness — particularly when combined with CBD; CBN is sometimes marketed as a sleep aid for this reason
  • Drug test risk — one study found consuming CBN resulted in a positive THC test, and may create an “additive effect” that makes trace THC levels appear higher than they actually are. This is a significant risk for anyone subject to drug testing.

Is CBN legal in the UK?

No — CBN is not legal in the UK. It is a controlled substance due to its structural relationship to THC. Despite being marketed in some markets, UK consumers should not purchase CBN products. CBD, by contrast, is fully legal when hemp-derived and within UK regulations.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better — CBD or CBN?

CBD is legal in the UK, far better researched and widely available. CBN is not legal in the UK and remains early-stage. For now, CBD is the clear practical choice.

Can CBN help with sleep?

Preclinical evidence suggests sedative properties, particularly in combination with CBD. However, CBN is not legal in the UK and no human clinical trials support definitive claims.

Will CBN cause a positive drug test?

Yes — studies have found CBN can trigger a positive THC drug test and may amplify apparent THC levels. This is a significant concern for anyone subject to testing.

Is CBN psychoactive?

Mildly, potentially — CBN is a degradation product of THC and may have very mild psychoactive effects at high doses, unlike CBD which is fully non-psychoactive.

Final thoughts on CBD vs CBN

CBN shows early promise in preclinical research — particularly for sleep, pain and antibacterial applications — but it is not legal in the UK and human evidence is extremely limited. For now, CBD remains the evidence-backed, legal choice. If you’re interested in the potential sedative synergy of CBD and CBN, our Sleep CBD Oil is designed for evening calm and restful sleep.
