The best treatment for anxiety is therapy and anti-anxiety medications. But why are some people turning towards natural remedies like CBD oil? Read on to find out!
Anxiety is a common mental health issue that affects millions of people worldwide.
Although it can be difficult to treat, it can be easier to manage with wellbeing practices.
CBD oil is a common product used by people to restore mindfulness and balance processes within the body.
Anxiety typically causes a feeling of unsettlement, which can be easier to manage when you balance and restore your mental wellbeing.
Today, we will cover:
- Why you should be wary of companies saying CBD can fix your anxiety
- What CBD oil can do for your nerves & general wellbeing
- How to use CBD for rebalancing your body and mind
It’s important to remember that CBD is not a medicine or a treatment for any ailment or mental health issue – including anxiety.
Although plenty of people use CBD oil for anxiety, there is no explicit proof that it can be used as a treatment.
What's in this Guide?
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a mix of emotions.
The most common feelings people have when it comes to anxiety are:
- Feelings of worry and nervousness
- Racing thoughts
- Heightened alertness
It can be easy for a person that deals with anxiety to feel uneasy in certain situations and have poor mental wellbeing.
Often, anxiety disorders come hand-in-hand with other mental health issues such as depression.
They may often feel an imbalance in their emotions, which makes them feel uncertain or certain environments or situations.
There are also physical symptoms of anxiety, including:
- Diarrhea & Stomach Aches
- Panic attacks
- Trouble sleeping
Although these emotions are treatable with medication and talking therapies, which is the best course of action, they can also be managed through practicing wellbeing.
Often, people with anxiety may be encouraged to practice breathing exercises or go on a walk – because these sorts of things can help rebalance the body.
However, a walk or breathing exercises cannot cure an anxiety disorder – and neither can supplements such as CBD oil.
But, just like going on a walk, it may be able to help encourage balance in the mind & body.
Can CBD Oil Help With Anxiety?
It is important to state that CBD oil is not a medicine and cannot treat any particular ailment, including anxiety.
However, it can help to promote calm and restore balance. Both of which are processes that could make dealing with anxiety more manageable.
The way CBD oil works to encourage overall wellness is by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system.
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) manages homeostasis by controlling a number of other systems in the mind and body including:
- The endocrine system
- The immune system
- The central nervous system
- The reproductive system
- The digestive system
Because the ECS interacts with all of these systems and more, there are many potential benefits of CBD oil.
This means that when the endocannabinoid system is balanced, the chemicals in your body remain stable, which can promote overall wellness and wellbeing.
Cannabinoid receptors are the guys to thank for a well-balanced mind and body.
The ECS contains cannabinoid receptors, which act like locks for a number of ‘keys’ that are found naturally within the body, as well as supplemented (such as CBD or even caffeine).
These receptors are linked to the internal cellular membranes, which help maintain homeostasis.
CBD and the endocannabinoid system work together to regain normal homeostasis when feelings of stress or nervousness kick in.
Thus, CBD can help regain balance and promote general wellness.
Why Should You Be Wary of Companies Selling CBD Oil For Anxiety?
Many companies sell CBD as a medicine or treatment for medical concerns, such as anxiety.
They claim that by using their product, you will be able to treat your anxiety and diminish your concerns.
You should understand that CBD should not or cannot be used as a medicine to treat anxiety.
Instead, it should be seen and used as a supplement in the same way you would consume vitamins and minerals that are bought over-the-counter.
An example of a similar product would be Vitamin C, which is commonly used around the colder months to boost the immune system.
In the same way, CBD boosts the endocannabinoid system.
Even if you take Vitamin C every day all winter, you may still get sick – and this is how CBD should be thought of when it comes to the endocannabinoid system, too.
What we do know, however, is that Vitamin C can prevent colds and flu and encourage the body to fight it better – the same goes for CBD and mental wellness.
Natural supplements are to help the body achieve balance, meaning CBD oil should be used to gain overall wellbeing and mindful balance, rather than treat any particular problem.
Be wary of those companies that claim to be selling any product, such as CBD oil, to treat your anxiety – especially if they say you can replace medication and therapy with your CBD.
The only treatment for anxiety is talking therapies and medication – often a combination of both is used for the best results.
If you think you are struggling with an anxiety disorder, you should speak to a doctor to seek help.
How Does CBD Oil Work?
The endocannabinoid system consists of two main receptors, known as cannabinoid receptors.
These are known as CB1 and CB2, and function in different ways.
The CB1 receptors are mostly found in the central nervous system.
These regulate neurotransmitters, which can help to promote calm and mindfulness.
CB2 receptors are found in your peripheral nervous system, especially the immune system.
These receptors bind with endocannabinoids to tell your ECS to take action.
If your receptors are not working as effectively, your general mental and physical wellbeing will not be at peak performance.
Scientists aren’t sure how CBD truly works – other than that it’s different to THC.
But many theorise that CBD stops your body’s natural endocannabinoids breaking down, so they can work more effectively with the cannabinoid receptors in your body.
How Do You Use CBD Oil for Anxiety?
There are a variety of methods regarding how to use CBD oil for restoring balance and encouraging overall wellness, which might help anxiety feelings feel more manageable.
However, we would argue that the best way to take CBD will vary from person to person.
The most popular methods are:
The fastest way to get a dose of CBD oil is to absorb it under your tongue, which is known as the sublingual method.
Because of this, you may find that simply using CBD oil drops under your tongue is the quickest way to get the CBD into your bloodstream and start doing its work.
Using drops offers better CBD bioavailability so that the effects will be greater and even last longer.
However, this method isn’t ideal for everyone due to the earthy taste of CBD and it can be annoying if you want to take it when out and about.
One of the common ways in which people are turning to incorporate CBD into their daily routine is using CBD capsules, or combining CBD with food and drink.
Capsules are used a lot because of the ease of taking them – many people take a capsule or two in the morning or before bed.
It also means it’s easy to take while out and about, if you feel you need to.
The bioavailability is not as high as it is with the sublingual method, meaning you may need more capsules to show any results.
Topical Balms and Creams
You can also apply CBD oil directly to your skin through topical balms and creams.
This method has limited scientific studies into it’s effectiveness, but as time goes on there will likely be a lot more information.
Using topical CBD has a reduced bioavailability in comparison to consuming CBD as it is not directly consumed, and has to make its way through the skin before entering the bloodstream.
CBD oil can also be vaped through pens and e-cigarettes.
Like the sublingual method, vaping can offer a high bioavailability as it will directly enter the body.
However, the majority of CBD vape e-liquids are made from CBD isolate which vapes more smoothly.
Unfortunately, this means the vape fluid is 100% CBD – which sounds like a good thing, but actually means it is missing many of the other cannabinoids and beneficial ingredients of the hemp plant, including:
- More than 100 other cannabinoids
- Omega fatty acids
Realistically, it all depends on you, what you find the most convenient to take and how much you wish to take each time.
The bioavailability also might play a big part as you might want the effects of feeling calm and balanced to last longer.
How Much CBD Oil Do You Use for Anxiety?
There are no established doses for taking CBD.
While this may sound worrying, it’s worth remembering there are very few established side effects worth worrying about either.
The only reported side effects, which are very uncommon are:
- Changes in appetite
- Changes in mood
- Dry mouth
There has also not been an upper limit found of CBD which is dangerous – even consuming 1500mg a day does not appear to cause any major problems.
However, CBD can be expensive (particularly if it is high quality) so you of course don’t want to be using more than is needed.
As a result, the best way to use CBD oil to promote wellness and normal homeostasis is to start with a very small dose.
For example, a single drop of CBD oil, which should usually contain around 3mg of CBD, is ideal for many first time users, especially if you are smaller in size.
Then, you can continue to increase it over time.
You will likely find that it is more and more effective as you increase the dosage until you hit the point of diminishing returns and this is no longer the case.
When you hit this point, you have probably found your ideal CBD dose.
You may find you need higher doses depending on your metabolism, or if you are taller or weigh more than average.
There are CBD dosage calculators available online but they are vague estimates at best and doing what feels best for you is likely to produce better results.
Does CBD Oil Cause Panic Attacks?
This is a common misconception that stems from the confusion between marijuana and hemp.
Panic attacks from smoking cannabis recreationally are a side effect that can occur.
While studies into what exactly causes this are inconclusive and in early days, there have been many anecdotal stories linking panic attacks and cannabis.
But, very few side effects have been experienced in trials into CBD, which has led many to believe that THC is behind the cannabis-related anxiety that some have experienced.
Either way, you’ll be glad to know that none of the existing studies have pointed to CBD as the culprit.
But even if this is true, how is CBD oil good for anxiety?
It will likely be years before anyone can 100% conclusively answer this question, but the answer almost certainly lies within the endocannabinoid system.
This system within the human body is a relatively new discovery but has been found to communicate with all of our other internal systems and help to balance them out and promote homeostasis.
It does this through a series of “locks and keys”, otherwise known as cannabinoid receptors and cannabinoids. Some of these cannabinoids are produced naturally by the body – or you can take it as a supplement.
CBD is one of these “keys” and plays a huge part in regulating the endocannabinoid system.
Which CBD Oil is Best?
There are a variety of CBD oil products out there.
Deciding which brands are which will take some research of your own and some careful consideration.
Transparent lab results
Companies that have nothing to hide with their products will openly display their lab test results on their website, or included within the product when you receive it.
If the lab test results are not published, then you can’t be sure of what is in your product.
At best, they’re likely to have less CBD in than you want.
At worst, this could mean higher THC levels than is legal, or some other compounds which could be dangerous.
Organic & sustainably produced
Choosing an organic CBD product means you’re skipping all of the potentially harmful pesticides and chemicals that you don’t want to be consuming.
This makes your product better for you, and even better for the planet.
Additionally, all parts of the production process should be sustainable – from the organic plants to the plastic-free packaging where possible.
Choosing a brand dedicated to having a positive impact on the environment is important if you want to choose a high-quality, sustainable CBD oil.
Broad or full-spectrum CBD oil
Broad-spectrum CBD has no THC content, but several other cannabinoids that can contribute to offering quicker effects greater bioavailability using the entourage effect.
You can also buy full-spectrum CBD, which has 0.3% THC.
This per cent is not enough to result in a ‘high’ and is safe for people to use, but isn’t ideal for people who get drug tested regularly.
Alternatively, a CBD isolate product only has CBD molecules in.
This means there is no entourage effect which may mean you see fewer or slower balancing effects.
There is no right or wrong answer for which is best when it boils down to choosing between CBD isolate vs broad spectrum or full-spectrum products – it is simply a personal choice.
However, CBD that is broad-spectrum is best in our opinion because you skip the THC content, but keep all of the beneficial additions such as other cannabinoids and terpenes.
Extraction method is important
Have you ever wondered how CBD is extracted?
Ensuring it uses an efficient extraction method will mean that harsh chemicals will be removed, which will increase its purity and offer a cleaner product.
The best extraction method is CO2 extraction, which is what we use at Evopure.
CO2 extraction is more expensive than other methods, but maintains the best quality CBD with no harmful additions.
CBD extracted using this method is likely to have better results on the overall wellbeing of your body, as well.
Avoid the cheap stuff!
Cheap CBD can be low quality, and may not have much, if any, CBD in at all.
It could even be dangerous if you don’t buy it from somewhere reputable.
Cheap CBD means the company is cutting corners somewhere – likely in the extraction or labour process.
This makes it at best, less effective, and at worst, unethical and perhaps even dangerous.
They’re also probably not carrying out lab test results to prove what is in their product.
Thus, always check the label and that the CBD oil is tested and certified.
If you wish to use CBD oil to balance your mindfulness and promote general wellness, it can help restore and maintain homeostasis.
CBD oil should not be considered a medicine for an anxiety disorder – even if other brands say it is a great treatment.
Instead, using it in the same way that you would a supplement is the correct way to use it. You can use it in various ways and find differing types, depending on your preference.
Ensure your CBD oil is tested and certified to ensure it is safe for use.
