CBD butter is an essential base for most CBD recipes

If you’re looking to cook or bake with CBD oil, the first thing you need to do is infuse CBD into some form of fat

Ingredients based on oil or fat are the best carriers for CBD, and this also makes it easy to add the ideal amount of CBD to almost any recipe without fundamentally changing the taste of your recipe.

CBD is best when combined with ingredients like butter or coconut oil, but you could also mix it up by adding it to nut butter for a delicious treat.

We’ll cover the following:

  • Why CBD oil has to be infused with a fat or oil before being cooked
  • How to make CBD butter and CBD nut butter
  • How to use CBD butter

Once you have a batch of CBD butter ready to go, you’ll be able to add it to endless recipes that call for butter, coconut oil or other fats. So, let’s find out how to make it!

In this guide:

What is CBD butter?

CBD butter is a blend of CBD oil with melted butter and water. The mixture is then allowed to solidify so it can be used in recipes for things like CBD cakes or brownies.

CBD butter shouldn’t be confused with cannabutter, which is a combination of cannabis and butter. Cannabutter contains cannabis, which contains high levels of THC.

CBD butter does not contain any THC, but it is filled with beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, which can offer therapeutic benefits.

Since there are a number of reported CBD benefits and its popularity is soaring, you might decide to use a method that’s different from simply dissolving drops under your tongue.

However, you need to ensure you do it in a way that ensures the best possible CBD bioavailability and effectiveness. Otherwise, you might end up wasting your CBD oil.

Why does CBD need to be infused with fat or oil?

Heating CBD a little can increase its effectiveness, but heating it too much can destroy the cannabinoids.

As a result, you need to bind your CBD oil with fat to protect it from high temperatures during cooking and baking. Since CBD is a lipid, it binds well with fats like butter or coconut oil.

Combining CBD with fat also helps to increase the absorption rate during digestion.

Coconut oil and butter also have low smoke points and are easy to burn, so they are ideal for combining with CBD oil.
